Calai Chandra School of Bharatanatyam Dance & Yoga Reviews
Calai Chandrashekharan is a terrific Bharatanatyam dancer who follows the Kalakshetra school of training. She is not just any talented Bharatanatyam dancer but takes the art above and beyond to a different level with her prowess of the art and flexibility from her yoga training. Her understanding of the dance is deep given that she holds an MFA degree (Masters in Fine Arts) from the renowned Madurai University. Her teaching style entails perfection of postures and hastas and she makes sure that her students internalize them as part of their muscle memory. Furthermore, she always shares the background of every piece she teaches with its detailed history and context so that the information settles in the minds of her students. This helps her students transcend their expressions while dancing as they understand the underlying emotion associated with the dance.I have a special bond with Calai School of Bharatanatyam as my daughter benefitted from the school and has been pursuing the art for the last 8 years. The school has come a long way and I wish Calai the very best in expanding futher with more branches so that more people can benefit from the school.
Sep 22, 2022 · Indrani DasI am extremely grateful that I met Ms. Calai over seven years ago and she initiated my daughter in such a rich and authentic tradition of Bharatanatyam. In the current age of modernity where folks are intermixing different genres of Indian and Western music and dance in an effort to stay 'contemporary,' Ms. Calai truly stands out as a real diamond in her presence, mentorship and true command of the Natya Shastra. She is well-respected in the Classical Bharatanatyam community for her simplicity and authenticity to tradition. As a second generation South Asian woman, I am truly humbled and grateful that my third generation South Asian daughter can learn the real roots of Bharatnatyam from such a phenomenal teacher and role model. Ms. Calai is truly a trailblazer in her field, as young students, both male and female, but in particular females, can look at her accomplishments in the field of science, engineering, dance and Sanskrit, and witness how well she imbibes her South Indian heritage and balances it with her approach to bringing the enlightenment of the Vedic heritage to modern audiences. She is a pioneer and visionary in her own right as she passionately lives her responsibility to future generations to leave Vedic culture and authentic Bharatnatyam in the hands of a well-trained and culturally sound youth. Her training is meticulous, rigorous and comprehensive, on par with many of the best schools in India. She expects nothing less than the best the students can offer. I most highly recommend this School to students who understand and appreciate the deep sophistication of Bharatnatyam.
Oct 08, 2022 · Roli KI started my journey at this prestigious school since I was four. (Learning for 8 years) I then continued with lots of excitement, joy, and curiosity. I have learned so much from this Opportunity, like teamwork, hard work, and how to be a good student. I have never felt any moment of apathy while dancing, which I wouldn’t have been able to do without my guru, Calai Chandra, who has also provided me with so many opportunities to excel in my journey. This classical Indian dance has also improved how I live as well. With a plethora of improvements to my body, this dance is a form of meditation, which cures the body, with providing relaxation, and calmness. Ms. Calai has also been teaching me the ancient, and classical language, Tamizh.(Tamil)Along with Tamil, I have also been taught the backstory with every dance, whether it is serious, romance, or a comedy. The moment I step on stage is a totally different feeling, with no stage fright, which this dance has also taught me. Every dance move, beat, emotion, and rhythm is so intricate, which is what makes it so beautiful. I hope to continue learning Bharatanatyam at the Calai Chandra’s school, whilst I also have a long way ahead of me ♥️
