Shubanjali School of Performing Arts (Bharatanatyam) Introduce
For New Jersey residents passionate about immersing themselves in the rich traditions of Indian classical dance, the Shubanjali School of Performing Arts stands as a beacon of excellence. Specializing in Bharatanatyam, one of the oldest and most revered classical dance forms originating from South India, Shubanjali offers an unparalleled educational and artistic journey. It’s more than just a dance school; it's a nurturing environment where students are guided to not only master intricate dance techniques but also to connect with a deeper cultural understanding and achieve holistic personal growth.
Bharatanatyam is a captivating art form that intricately weaves together expression (Bhava), melody (Raga), rhythm (Tala), and dramatic representation (Natyam). It is characterized by a fixed upper torso, bent legs with flexed knees (Aramandi), precise footwork, and a rich vocabulary of hand gestures (mudras), eye movements, and facial expressions. A typical performance, often lasting two to three hours, showcases a dancer's mastery through a structured repertoire known as a 'Margam', which includes pure dance (Nritta), expressive storytelling (Nritya), and dramatic elements (Natya).
At Shubanjali, the approach to teaching Bharatanatyam transcends mere steps and movements. As highlighted by numerous testimonials, the school's founders and instructors, particularly "Suba Akka and Suresh sir," are celebrated for their unwavering support, nurturing care, and profound commitment to their students (shishyas). They possess a remarkable ability to identify both strengths and weaknesses, fostering an environment where students can truly flourish, not just in dance but in their daily lives. This personalized attention ensures that each student's journey is tailored to bring out their absolute best.
The school's philosophy emphasizes a holistic growth, encouraging students to connect with their inner selves and gain a higher perspective through the art form. This dedication to a comprehensive educational experience makes Shubanjali School of Performing Arts a truly unique and invaluable resource for the New Jersey community. It’s a place where passion for dance meets a profound respect for cultural heritage and personal development.
The glowing reviews consistently praise the teachers' patience, passion for the art, and commitment, making it clear why Shubanjali comes highly recommended for anyone embarking on a dance journey. The deep bond formed between gurus and students, coupled with the rigorous yet supportive training, creates an inspiring foundation for artistic and personal excellence.

Sep 09, 2024 · Ravi SrinivasanMy daughter Annika has been learning Bharathanatyam at Shubanjali School of Performing Arts now since the age of 6. She just finished her Arangetram and felt confident and well prepared, and we were so proud of her accomplishment. It was a life changing experience and went on seamlessly, and has also motivated her to continue with her senior dance education. Guru Suba is an amazing dancer, a kind, loving, and compassionate teacher - she is always inspirational to the children as well as tells them stories and the meaning of their dances so they can truly connect to their roots and philosophy. She even hosts the senior students preparing for arangetram for sleepover optional dance camps to motivate them and for bonding. Guru Suresh is also an amazing teacher and dancer, and brings out the perfection in dance steps for the students and is firm with technique yet funny and loving. He is also very inspirational to the children and an asset to the school. Annika has also had many amazing teachers at Shubanjali while learning the basics as a beginner. All in all, this is a wonderful dance school that teaches students perfection in the art form, heritage and meaning, and builds confidence and camaraderie in a safe loving environment. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to have their child learn the ancient beautiful art from Bharathanatyam. Thank you so much Shubhanjali!
Sep 12, 2023 · Subha SundararajanSuba Aunty is the best Bhartnatyam teacher we had. We just had our Arangetram (It was 124th and 125th Shubanjali Arangetram) She’s has won many many awards in the field. She is not only very passionate and dedicated but also very kind and considerate. She sees the unique qualities in every student and gets the best out of them. Never seen her get mad on students and manages everything very patiently. Because of Suba Aunty and Suresh Sir, my daughters truly love dancing. We would highly recommend her!!
