For families and individuals living in Oregon, particularly those within the vibrant Portland metropolitan area, the Oregon Ballet School stands out as an exemplary choice for dance education. Its suitability for locals stems from a confluence of factors that prioritize both convenience and unparalleled quality.
Firstly, its prime location at 1017 SW Morrison St in downtown Portland is a significant advantage. As highlighted by local parents, being "on the MAX and streetcar lines" makes commuting to and from classes incredibly convenient. This ease of access through public transport ensures that children and adults alike can attend classes without the added stress of navigating traffic or finding parking, making it a practical choice for busy Oregonians.
Beyond logistics, the core strength of Oregon Ballet School lies in its educational philosophy and the caliber of its instruction. The school's adoption of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) curriculum is a testament to its commitment to internationally recognized standards of ballet training. This means that students receive a comprehensive, safe, and progressive dance education that is respected worldwide. Local parents rave about the effectiveness of this approach, with one noting that teacher Leslie "does a phenomenal job of teaching her students and making sure that they are placed in the correct level. She really puts a lot of thought into her lessons and really helps the students perfect their dancing." This dedication to individual student success is a cornerstone of the school's appeal to discerning local families.
Furthermore, the "boutique-style school" environment, characterized by smaller class sizes, ensures that each student receives the personalized attention crucial for mastering the intricate techniques of ballet. This individualized focus allows instructors to truly connect with students, provide targeted feedback, and foster an atmosphere where everyone feels supported and seen. The benefits extend beyond dance technique; as one parent eloquently put it, "Ballet has been fantastic for both of my children. They have built strength, learned how to focus, and have made great friends." This holistic development, encompassing physical prowess, mental discipline, and social connection, is precisely what many local parents seek for their children's extracurricular activities.
The long-standing positive impact of the school is perhaps best encapsulated by the testimonial of Jennifer McCaig, a former student from the late 1970s and 80s, who credits Leslie Baird with instilling "a love of the art and discipline" and, even after taking classes globally, considers her "the best teacher I've ever encountered." Such enduring loyalty and high praise from alumni underscore the consistent quality and nurturing culture that define Oregon Ballet School. For any Oregon local considering ballet for themselves or their children, Oregon Ballet School offers not just dance classes, but a supportive community, expert instruction, and a proven track record of cultivating talent and a lifelong appreciation for the art of ballet. Aug 27, 2019 · Kylara KlymAs a student of Leslie Baird's from 1977 to 1987, I thrived in the nurturing culture at OBS as she led me successfully through 7 Royal Academy of Dancing exams. She instilled in me a love of the art and discipline, and as an adult I've returned to ballet and enjoy her classes whenever I'm visiting Portland. I've taken classes in Japan, the Soviet Union, and England, and she's the best teacher I've ever encountered.-- Jennifer McCaig
