Thought I was going to die; now I feel alive! 🐦🔥I just took my first pole class at age 39. I’m out of shape, have zero upper body strength, am a little scared of heights and it’s been awhile since I was used to regular bumps and bruises from sports. In spite of my fears, I decided to give it a try.I have a history of mostly self-taught dance and played roller derby for a few years before a knee injury took me out of the game. It took awhile, but I’m finding my way back to myself through movement. I met Amy Bond (Pole + Dance founder) at a writing conference and my curiosity was piqued. Could this be my new thing?My first class was Pole Foundations with Tyler who made me feel at ease instantly, saying “New to pole people are my favorite.” Tyler showed our class so many moves I thought I’d never be able to do, but with their gentle and supportive spirit, expertise and encouragement I was actually able to surprise myself by doing some of the more tricky skills! It was also really helpful to hear from other students who had been training with Tyler report that they were able to do things now that they weren’t able to just a couple classes ago. I was inspired by my small wins and felt like the learning curve would be straight up, which is how I felt about skating. The more you try, the more you can do and at an impressive rate.There were definitely moments I thought I might die (like doing my first pole climb and pole sit, ouch!), but I ended up feeling even more alive. Tyler’s talk about our nerves and lizard brains was informative and endearing. Basically, the more we do it (and have fun while doing so) the less my body will react so strongly. Watching Tyler look so strong and beautiful on the pole motivated me to want to do the hard things, too.Thank you Tyler for such a wonderful experience. I think this could definitely be my new thing! May 04, 2025 · Erin LaCerraI am grateful to this studio for providing me with my first taste of pole. Though to be honest, I didn't have the best experience at my first foundations class. While the instructor was nice and the overall vibe of the students was welcoming, I felt that the class was overcrowded and a bit chaotic, which made it hard to learn anything for my first time. I couldn't ask for much assistance from the instructor due to their hands being tied having to juggle so many students. I also felt that the students who got the most attention were those who were doing well. I would suggest that especially for beginner classes, the size could be reduced.I took a second class with Mia a couple weeks afterward, which ended up as a one-on-one due to nobody showing up, and that experience was excellent. She is a wonderful teacher and great at what she does. Due to her natural ability and the extremely small class size, she was able to teach me well and I believe I learned a lot from her, including some simple choreography. I walked away from that lesson feeling accomplished and proud. I also tried a private lesson with Tyler, and they were able to show me a lot of the ropes. Both instructors made me feel confident in the learning process and did well showing me different ways to perform basic techniques, working with me until I got a better understanding of what I was working on. I'd definitely want to learn more from either of them.The location of this place is nice and clean, easily accessible with instructions once you sign up for the class, providing safety to students from unwelcome intruders in a closed environment. However, compared to the competition in the city, they're on the pricier side for what they offer. I personally am not a fan of some of the policies they hold in terms of cancellation, with a pretty strict requirement to cancel 24 hours in advance. I'm completely against people not showing up for their classes with no notice, as I believe it is disrespectful. However, most fitness studios require 12 hours in advance, which I believe is much more reasonable as life happens. Sometimes you can go to sleep without any problems and wake up in the morning either sick or having to deal with something more imminent. Late cancellations do not get refunded. However, after explaining I had woken up sick and that's why my cancellation was late, they did let me reschedule, which I appreciate. I am also not a fan of the fact that if you buy a starter pack of three lessons, you must use it all within a month, because I have seen other places with more flexibility. For many busy adults, a month is a pretty short amount of time.

Throughout my journey here, I've had the pleasure of learning from a diverse group of skilled instructors including Iris, Melody, Matt, Rae, Sarah Ray, Slinky, Kat, and Amy. Their expertise and encouragement have not only helped me master new tricks and improve my flow, but they've also boosted my self-confidence significantly.Beyond the classes, I've thoroughly enjoyed participating in the various community events such as pole jams with book and clothing swaps, fostering a sense of camaraderie among members.Moreover, the introduction of monthly showcases has provided a wonderful opportunity for performers to showcase their talents in a supportive and stress-free environment.Completing the pole foundations teaching course was an enriching experience that expanded my knowledge and skills in pole dancing instruction.Above all, Portland Pole and Dance offers more than just classes and events; it provides a welcoming community space where individuals are embraced for who they are.
Jun 14, 2024 · Mia OrloffI booked my fist private group lesson for a Bachelorette party for the 4 of us. Our instructor was AMAZING! She started out by getting to know us. She made us feel so comfortable becsuse we were nervous of our abilites to actually do this. She made it work for us and she was super funny! I highly recommend Liz as your instructor! It was so fun that I want to go back again someday!

Rachel was warm and welcoming from the moment I walked in, and my instructor Shay brought a fun and exciting energy to class that made me feel comfortable and included. I believe this studio has something for EVERYONE! I'm so glad I had the chance to be a part of such a beautiful community.
