Her ability to foster "an incredible sense of community and FUN" ensures that every class is a highlight of the week for her students, making ballet a truly enjoyable pursuit rather than a daunting challenge.

City Ballet Studio is conveniently located at 440 Lafayette St, New York, NY 10003, USA. This address places it in the vibrant and easily accessible NoHo/East Village area of Manhattan. The specific studio location is often on the 4th floor (Studio 4F), and access may require buzzing "Playwrights" upon arrival for elevator access, as mentioned in their FAQs.
The studio's location on Lafayette Street is highly advantageous for New Yorkers relying on public transportation. It is just a short walk from several major subway stations:
Astor Place Station (4, 6 trains): This station is very close, offering direct access for those on the Lexington Avenue line.
Bleecker Street Station (6 train): Another convenient option on the same line.
Broadway-Lafayette Street Station (B, D, F, M trains): This station provides access to multiple lines, making it easily reachable from various parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn.
8th Street-NYU Station (N, R, W trains): Also within a reasonable walking distance, connecting to additional subway routes.
The area is also well-served by numerous bus routes. Being in a central and well-connected neighborhood means that students can easily commute to classes from different parts of New York City, whether coming from work, home, or other engagements. The lively surroundings of NoHo and the East Village also offer a pleasant environment with plenty of options for pre- or post-class activities, from grabbing a coffee to exploring the local shops and restaurants.
City Ballet Studio specializes in providing accessible and engaging ballet instruction, particularly for adult beginners. Their services are carefully structured to ensure a positive and progressive learning experience:
Actual Beginner Adult Ballet Series: This is their flagship offering, specifically designed for individuals with no prior ballet experience or those returning after a very long break. These classes are structured in a multi-month series, meaning the curriculum builds upon itself week by week. This series approach ensures a consistent learning environment and allows students to progress together as a cohort, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie. Students are advised to inquire about when the next series begins.
Adult Ballet Drop-in Classes (Levels 1, 2/3): Beyond the dedicated beginner series, City Ballet Studio also offers drop-in classes for those with some prior ballet experience. Ballet 1 is for students new or returning to ballet who have some foundational knowledge, while Ballet 2/3 is for those with at least two years of current ballet training, focusing on intermediate-level technique. These classes are available on a more flexible, drop-in basis.
Private Ballet Lessons: For students seeking highly personalized instruction, City Ballet Studio offers private ballet lessons. These one-on-one sessions allow instructors to tailor the curriculum precisely to the student's individual needs, goals, and pace, accelerating learning and addressing specific areas for improvement.
Pilates Mat Classes: Recognizing the importance of core strength and body conditioning for dancers, the studio also offers Pilates mat classes. These sessions are often tailored to target and strengthen muscles specifically used in a dancing body, complementing ballet training.
Performance Sessions: Periodically, City Ballet Studio may offer Adult Dance Performance Sessions (e.g., a multi-week series culminating in a performance opportunity). This allows students to learn choreography and experience the joy of performing in a supportive environment.
Flexible Pricing Options: They offer individual class rates, as well as discounted class packages (e.g., 5-class or 10-class punch cards), providing flexibility for students' budgets and commitment levels. The Actual Beginner Adult Ballet Series is typically booked as a series rather than drop-in.
Welcoming and Non-Intimidating Environment: A core "service" is the creation of a "friendly" and "approachable" learning space where students feel comfortable asking questions and exploring new movements without judgment.
City Ballet Studio stands out in the New York City dance scene due to several distinct features and highlights that make it particularly appealing to local aspiring dancers, especially adult beginners:
Specialization in Adult Beginners: This is arguably their strongest highlight. Many dance studios cater predominantly to experienced dancers or children. City Ballet Studio's explicit focus on "Actual Beginner Adult Ballet classes" fills a crucial niche, making ballet truly accessible to those with no prior experience.
Jennifer's Exceptional Instruction: The instructor, Jennifer, receives overwhelming praise from students. She is consistently described as "amazing," "kind, funny," and someone who "knows everyone by their names." Her ability to instill "joy and energy" and a desire to "keep practicing" is a testament to her teaching prowess and personality.
Strong Sense of Community: Jennifer actively "creates an incredible sense of community and FUN." This nurturing environment is a huge draw, allowing students to feel comfortable, supported, and connected with fellow learners, which is vital for sustained engagement in any new activity.
Structured Multi-Month Beginner Series: The "Actual Beginner Adult Ballet classes" are offered in a multi-month series format. This progressive structure allows students to build fundamental skills systematically and confidently, rather than feeling lost in a drop-in class. It ensures a consistent learning curve and helps foster a deeper understanding of ballet principles.
Approachable and Non-Varying Class Level: Unlike other studios where "the class level can vary wildly," City Ballet Studio maintains a consistent and genuinely beginner-friendly level for its introductory series, ensuring that new students are never overwhelmed.
Empowering and Encouraging Environment: Students feel "free to ask questions and share my opinion," indicating an open and supportive classroom where exploration is encouraged, rather than strict adherence to silent instruction. This fosters confidence and a positive learning mindset.
Tangible Improvement: Students explicitly "noticed my improvement in ballet," highlighting the effectiveness of the instruction and the curriculum.
Convenient Manhattan Location: Situated on Lafayette Street in NoHo/East Village, the studio is easily accessible via multiple subway lines, making it practical for New Yorkers from various parts of the city to attend regularly.
No Strict Dress Code: While encouraging comfortable movement, the studio does not enforce a rigid ballet dress code, further reducing barriers for newcomers and promoting comfort and confidence.

City Ballet Studio Reviews
If you're looking to learn ballet as a complete beginner, City Ballet Studio is the best option in NYC, in my opinion! I tried the basic/beginner level classes at different studios -- they're wonderful, but the class level can vary wildly. This is the most approachable and the friendliest environment you can find. Jennifer is kind, funny, and knows everyone by their names. The Actual Beginner Adult classes are in a multi-month series so just inquire about when the next series starts (unless you have some experience to drop in in the middle).
Sep 18, 2024 · Ann LeeJennifer is AMAZING! She is so welcoming and I love her classes. She creates an incredible sense of community and FUN. I always have felt free to ask questions and share my opinion. Her classes are the highlight of my week. I can feel the joy and energy every week in every one of her students and herself. I also have noticed my improvement in ballet! I want to keep practicing all the time and that is so special for a teacher to instill that! I cannot recommend city ballet studio enough. (Coming from an absolute beginner)

Sep 19, 2023 · K PaPrior to finding City Ballet Studio, I hadn’t set foot in a ballet class in six years. I’d been wanting to get back into it for some time but was terrified. A friend recommended City Ballet Studio and from the very second I stepped foot in Jennifer’s class, it felt like a safe space for me as a dancer to learn, grow, and make mistakes with no fear of judgment. Jennifer is a patient and attentive instructor and I always look forward to coming to class each week! Highly recommend City Ballet Studio for any dancer looking to get back into the studio and rediscover their passion for ballet!
Feb 07, 2024 · Madison ScheuerI always loved dancing. I was introduced to Jen’s adult classes and now have the chance to return to ballet after all these years. Jen loves what she does and this makes every lesson enjoyable! We are gradually progressing and I look forward to learning more.
