I’m disappointed to say that I’ve withdrawn my children from this dance studio—not because of the quality of instruction (which is genuinely strong) or the dedication of the teachers (who are wonderful), but because of a deeply flawed and discriminatory policy that excludes fathers from accessing the backstage area.As a dad, I was not allowed to accompany my children to the staging area because it is adjacent to the dressing room, which is primarily used by girls. The studio’s policy only permits women with wristbands backstage—not mothers, just any woman with the right wristband. The implication is clear: gender, not parental status or responsibility, determines access.I understand that this rule was likely created with good intentions, aimed at protecting dancers’ privacy. But intention does not erase discrimination. Gender is not a valid proxy for safety, appropriateness, or trustworthiness. By enforcing this policy, the studio alienates involved fathers and sends a harmful message about who is seen as a safe and welcome caregiver.When I asked how I was supposed to help my autistic son and my daughter during a performance where I was the only parent present, the studio offered a workaround—not a change to the policy, and certainly not a solution. I sent multiple emails seeking clarity, including a direct question about how I was expected to get my daughter to her designated area. Nine days later, I still haven’t received a response.I regret having to pull my kids from a place they enjoyed and learned from, but I can’t support an environment that upholds gender-based exclusion. Policies that restrict access based on sex—rather than parental role, background checks, or other valid criteria—are outdated and unfair. I hope the studio reevaluates this practice for the benefit of all families, because right now, it’s falling short of the inclusive co-ed community it claims to foster.

My son dances at Steps N Motion and loves the atmosphere and the teachers. The studio and staff are very welcoming and we look forward to being there every week. Recital time is extremely organized and they put on a fantastic show every year!

Great place to dance. Two locations to help you find a class that will work with your schedule. Teachers are caring and great at teaching the youngest to the oldest. The rectails are a great production.
