The Academy of Ballet offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to cater to a wide spectrum of ballet enthusiasts, from absolute beginners to those pursuing serious pre-professional training. Their programs are thoughtfully structured to foster growth and a deep appreciation for classical ballet.
Adult Ballet Program: This is a highly praised cornerstone of the Academy's offerings. They provide an extensive multi-level adult program, ranging from "New Adult Beginning" for those with no prior experience to "Adult Advanced" classes. These classes focus on fundamental ballet posture, flexibility, strength, and technique, ensuring a strong foundation while allowing students to progress at their own pace. Reviewers specifically highlight the instructors' care for form to prevent injuries and their non-judgmental approach for slower learners.
Children and Teenager Classes: The Academy provides structured ballet instruction for various age groups, from young children (Pre-Ballet, often starting from age 4-7) through to teenagers. These classes introduce students to classical ballet technique, terminology, and musicality in a nurturing and fun environment, developing discipline, coordination, and confidence.
Full Professional Program: For students with serious aspirations in ballet, the Academy offers a professional program designed to provide rigorous training. This program aims to equip dancers with the skills necessary for advancement in the world of classical ballet, potentially preparing them for professional careers.
Focus on Form and Injury Prevention: A distinguishing aspect of their instruction, as noted by students, is the meticulous attention to proper form and technique. Instructors prioritize preventing injuries, which is crucial for dancers at all levels, and particularly appreciated by adult students returning to dance or starting anew.
Open to All Levels and Abilities: The Academy prides itself on being an inclusive environment where "everyone is welcome," regardless of their current skill level or physical abilities. This philosophy creates a supportive community where students feel encouraged rather than judged.
The Academy of Ballet stands out in the San Francisco dance scene due to several unique features and highlights that have fostered its dedicated community for decades:
Rich History and Continuous Operation: Established in 1953, the Academy of Ballet is one of San Francisco's oldest continuously operating ballet schools at the same location. This long-standing presence speaks to its stability, quality of instruction, and deep roots within the local community. It has even been featured in literature, like Armistead Maupin's "Tales of The City," adding to its iconic status.
Dedicated and Nurturing Instructors: The teaching staff, including popular instructors like Zory, Connolly, and Josh, receive consistent praise for being "amazing dancers that push you to the limit while having fun." Students highlight their patience, care for individual form, and ability to make learners feel "at home" and never judged, even for slower progress.
Intimate and Welcoming Studio Environment: Despite being a well-established institution, the Academy maintains a "very small space" with one large and one smaller studio. This intimate setting allows students to "know everyone by name very quickly," fostering a strong sense of community and family among its members. Many students, like the one who stayed for over a year and a half after an initial 2-month class, become deeply attached to the studio.
Strong Adult Program: While offering classes for all ages, the Academy's adult beginner program is particularly celebrated. It provides a unique opportunity for adults to learn or relearn ballet in a supportive, adult-focused environment, a feature that can be hard to find in some ballet schools.
Artistic and Historic Space: Located in the New Era Hall building, the Academy boasts a "historic, artistic, pillars-free, light-filled space that is rare and cannot be duplicated in a modern setting." Original paintings created for the Academy in 1990 adorn the entrance, contributing to an inspiring atmosphere that enhances the dance experience.
Community Hub: The Academy also serves as a host to several non-profit organizations, including Chamberdance, Smuin Ballet, Liss Fain Dance, and Sharp and Fine, further solidifying its role as a vital hub for the broader San Francisco dance community.

Academy of Ballet Reviews
I'm taking the adult beginner class with Zory and Connolly and I love it. The instructors really care about your form to prevent injuries down the road. Also, I'm a slow learner but I never feel judged for it.
Oct 06, 2024 · Alissa CI absolutely love this ballet studio. The staff is friendly and make you feel at home. It's a very small space, one large studio and one smaller studio, so you will know everyone by name very quickly. I started taking the adult beginner 2 month classes, and stayed for over a year and a half. My teachers were mainly Zori and Josh. Both amazing dancers that push you to the limit while having fun. The studio offers many levels of children, teenager, and adult classes. Everyone is welcome! The only reason I stopped going was because I moved back home. I miss this place so much!!
May 03, 2016 · FrancyWelcoming and supportive place and people. If you come to the Academy of Ballet you will be challenged but also encouraged, you will learn and grow immensely and have fun doing so. The decision to join was my best yet and I’m so thankful for the dance and dance family I met here. I took classes for close to 3 years but moved abroad so had to leave (otherwise wouldn’t have stopped!)
Jan 06, 2020 · GabiI have been practicing ballet at the Academy of Ballet for 6.5 years, and I highly recommend its Adult Program for the following reasons:1. Safe place for EVERYONEYou'll see various age groups with different dance levels and abilities. You'll have fun and make lots of new friends from different backgrounds. Zory, Elizabeth, and the other instructors are so patient with everyone.2. High-quality trainingThere is no difference in the quality of training between the beginning adult and professional courses. Instructors will explain every move in detail and train you with care.3. Beautiful bodyYou'll see positive changes in your body and in your posture. Stretching at ballet has relieved my body pain greatly; my body thanks me every day for these ballet classes.4. Strong mindThe biggest lesson that I have learned from Zory is to fail with graceful forgiveness to yourself and to keep working on it. I'm so grateful that this practice has changed my attitude at my life in so many positive ways.5. Live piano musicJust imagine. Dancing to classic ballet, along with live piano music, in a charming ballet studio. It is a lovely treat after a busy day!6. Flexible scheduleOnce you complete the beginner classes, you're allowed to take other classes up to your level. If you miss a class, you get to come to a makeup class within the next month.7. Know more and see moreLast, you'll enjoy ballet performances so much better since you will know more about ballet positions and moves as an audience. Also, as a ballet student, you will be able to learn from the performers themselves.
Jan 19, 2020 · Jennifer YoonThe Academy is a comfortable, supportive, environment with dynamite staff. They offer a myriad of adult classes (beginning and up) wherein you can channel (and challenge) your inner-ballerina.A wonderful experience, I couldn't recommend it more highly.
