Horrible reception so given up on checking this place out. What lessons are offered when, what age groups and pricing. I have no clue.Because I've personally visited this facility several times with a stroller and the various people at the reception have NO information for you and just tell to go to the website and contact the management by email. No URL or email address is provided. It is a kids dance/ballet teaching and venue facility under renovation or expansion but still seems in business. Lots of other more pleasant places to invest my time and money.Remember they are the face of your business and they face potential customers daily so invest in their training please and don't waste my time. - H. Manhattan Movement & Arts Center Introduce

Hello, New Yorkers! In a city that pulsates with artistic energy, finding a dedicated space where movement and creativity can truly thrive is essential for dancers, choreographers, and audiences alike. The Manhattan Movement & Arts Center (MMAC) stands as a significant "point of interest" on the city's performing arts landscape. More than just a collection of studios, MMAC is a comprehensive facility designed to cater to the evolving needs of New York City's vibrant arts community, offering a blend of world-class training, performance opportunities, and a welcoming environment for all ages.

MMAC was conceived as a dynamic space for people of all ages and levels to explore dance and movement. It's a place where children can exercise their curiosity, young dancers can refine their technique, and seasoned choreographers can develop their works. Beyond its educational mission, it also serves as a versatile venue for performances and special events, truly embodying its role as a cultural home base for its neighborhood. While a past review highlighted some issues with initial customer service and information accessibility, the core offerings and the beauty of the space itself remain a strong draw for anyone passionate about dance and the performing arts in NYC.

Manhattan Movement & Arts Center is strategically located at 248 W 60th St, New York, NY 10023, USA. This places it in a prime position on the west side of Midtown Manhattan, nestled between Amsterdam and West End Avenues. The neighborhood is experiencing growth and is increasingly becoming a lively residential and cultural area, making MMAC an integral part of its fabric.

Accessibility to MMAC is one of its strong points, thanks to New York City's extensive public transportation network. The center is easily reachable via multiple subway lines, with the A, B, C, D, 1, and 2 trains all having stations within reasonable walking distance. Numerous bus routes also serve the West 60th Street area, providing additional convenient options for commuters from various parts of Manhattan and surrounding boroughs. For those who opt to drive, there are several parking garages nearby, though public transportation is always recommended for navigating the city. This excellent connectivity ensures that students, performers, and audience members can reach the facility with relative ease, solidifying its role as a key arts destination.

Manhattan Movement & Arts Center offers a wide range of services designed to support and enhance the dance and performing arts community:

  • Dance Education Programs: MMAC is home to the Manhattan Youth Ballet (MYB), a pre-professional classical ballet academy offering graded programs for young dancers (ages 8 to 22 years). They also have a Children's Division (ages six weeks to 16 years) and general dance and fitness classes for all ages and experience levels, including adult programs like Sculpt Lab, Ballet Barre, and Yoga Flow.
  • Studio Rentals: MMAC provides five modern, climate-controlled studios for rent. These studios feature high ceilings (some rigged for aerial dance), sprung floors, mirrors, pianos, and sound systems, making them ideal for rehearsals, auditions (Equity approved), classes, and workshops for various dance styles and performing arts.
  • Theater Venue: The MMAC Theater is a versatile performance space with 180 seats (with telescopic seating), a proscenium stage, a suspended lighting grid, full digital audio playback, and a piano. It is available for staging performances, special events, lectures, parties, and receptions, serving both artists and organizations.
  • Audition Hosting: The studios are approved for Equity auditions, attracting professional dancers and companies seeking space for casting.
  • Café Service: There is a small café located inside the facility, offering "sandwiches and other tasty snacks" at "reasonably priced" rates. This provides convenience for students, parents, and visitors throughout the day.
  • Home to Other Institutions: Besides Manhattan Youth Ballet, MMAC also serves as a facility for other esteemed institutions like Ellison Ballet and Marymount Manhattan College, further cementing its role as a central hub for dance education.
  • Children's Programs (beyond ballet): In addition to ballet, MMAC, often through its association with Manhattan Youth, offers a variety of children's classes, including Creative Movement (ages 3-4), Pre-Ballet (ages 5-6), music and movement classes for babies and toddlers, and even specialized classes like "Make A Mess Art."

Manhattan Movement & Arts Center boasts several features and highlights that underscore its significance and appeal within the New York City arts scene:

  • State-of-the-Art Facilities: MMAC is an 18,000-square-foot multi-purpose facility with high-quality studios featuring sprung floors, mirrors, and advanced sound systems, as well as a well-equipped 180-seat theater.
  • Comprehensive Dance Training: As the home of Manhattan Youth Ballet, it offers rigorous, graded pre-professional classical ballet training for aspiring dancers, known for its high standards.
  • Diverse Offerings for All Ages: From specialized baby and toddler music and movement classes to adult ballet, contemporary, and fitness programs, MMAC truly caters to "people of all ages and levels."
  • Versatile Performance Space: The MMAC Theater serves as an intimate and well-designed venue for a wide range of productions, fostering connection between performers and audiences.
  • On-Site Café: The convenience of an indoor café with "reasonably priced" and "fresh food all day" is a significant perk for busy students and parents, enhancing the overall experience.
  • Strategic Location and Neighborhood Impact: Situated in a developing neighborhood, MMAC is poised to become an "anchor business," contributing to the area's growth as a cultural destination.
  • Support for the Arts Community: MMAC actively supports choreographers and dancers by providing spaces for rehearsal and development of new works, contributing to the vibrant ecosystem of New York's performing arts.
