Darrah Blanton Dance specializes in early childhood and elementary dance education, offering programs designed to be nurturing, cooperative, and fun. Their services focus on building a strong foundation in dance while also fostering broader developmental skills. The core classes typically offered include:
Creative Pre-Ballet: This class is designed for younger children, typically ages 3-5. It introduces fundamental ballet steps such as pliés, chassés, skips, leaps, and turns through engaging activities and storytelling. A key component of this class, and others, is the incorporation of the "BrainDance" method, which helps develop coordination, balance, and creativity while also building valuable social and emotional skills. This class aims to be a low-pressure and joyful introduction to dance.
Creative Ballet: Aimed at slightly older children, generally ages 5-10, this class deepens the introduction to ballet. Students explore basic ballet positions, learn barre exercises like pliés and tendus, and practice center floor balancing, leaps, and skips. The class focuses on ballet terminology, creating step combinations, and even some partner dances, all within a supportive and encouraging atmosphere. Sessions often culminate in a short choreographed performance for family and friends, providing a rewarding experience.
Ballet/Tap Combo: This popular combination class, often for ages 5.5-8, allows students to explore both ballet and tap dance. It develops skills with fundamental tap steps and rhythmic variations while complementing tap with foundational ballet technique. The class emphasizes individual expression and offers a well-rounded introduction to two distinct yet complementary dance forms.
BrainDance Integration: A unique offering across all classes is the consistent use of the BrainDance series of exercises. This is a thorough physical and neurological warm-up that enhances core support, reorganizes the neurological system, and increases oxygen and blood flow, contributing to both physical and cognitive development in young dancers.
Summer Camps and Workshops: Beyond regular season classes, Darrah Blanton Dance also offers week-long summer camps for ages 4-9, often culminating in a performance. These camps provide an immersive dance experience during school breaks.
Nurturing and Non-Competitive Environment: The school explicitly states its commitment to a "nurturing, cooperative and fun" atmosphere that is "non-competitive." This philosophy ensures that children can enjoy dance without undue pressure, fostering a genuine love for movement.
These services highlight Darrah Blanton Dance's dedication to providing a foundational, enjoyable, and developmentally appropriate dance education for children in Seattle.
