I am an older adult who has been taking dance classes at DMC Performing Arts Center in Fredericksburg, VA. Since October 2022, I’ve mainly studied with Beverly Mendez, an amazing teacher who truly understands body mechanics and dance technique, and is especially gifted in communicating this knowledge to students through her teaching style. When I started taking modern dance and floor-barre I had no idea how much I would be positively transformed by the experience. I had incurred a back injury ten years ago such that, while the excruciating back pain had finally tamped down, it would periodically flare-up and was agonizing. These dance classes have changed my body in ways unexpected. I especially recommend the floor-barre classes to anyone who wants to not only gain flexibility, but develop firmness of muscles without bulking up, and rather gain strength through a gentle but slimming process. My joint stiffness that was developing over the years since my injury, has practically disappeared. I had never heard of floor-barre until I went to DMC Performing Arts. It was originally designed by Zena Rommett for injured dancers so they could maintain their form while healing. Mrs. Mendez is a past NYC professional dancer who, not only teaches dance, but is a major contributor to the community by staging performance events and fundraisers for local charities. She was privileged to study floor-barre with Zena Rommett personally. Those who study with Beverly are benefiting from Zena’s legacy through her. If you live in the Fredericksburg, VA area, I recommend DMC Performing Arts Center and teacher Beverly Mendez for dance instruction of a quality rarely found in our community. I am grateful to have discovered DMC Performing Arts, and through Mrs. Mendez, the power and beauty of floor-barre. - Susan Heinbuch Phelps
