United Capoeira Association - Hayward Introduce
For residents across California seeking a truly unique blend of martial arts, dance, music, and vibrant community, the United Capoeira Association - Hayward stands as an exceptional cultural center. Born from the vision of esteemed Mestres Acordeon and Rã, the United Capoeira Association (UCA) was established to create an organization where similar philosophical ideals could thrive while preserving individual identities within the rich tradition of Capoeira. This particular Hayward branch, led by the highly respected Mestre Recruta (Chris Montiel), embodies the spirit of Capoeira as a tool for personal transformation and community building. As numerous glowing reviews attest, this is more than just a place to learn movements; it's a "home" where individuals are welcomed with open arms, supported, and encouraged to explore the multifaceted art form of Capoeira.
Capoeira itself is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that seamlessly blends elements of dance, acrobatics, music, and spirituality. It's often described as a fight, a dance, a game, and a story, all rolled into one dynamic and expressive practice. At United Capoeira Association - Hayward, students don't just learn kicks and evasions; they delve into the culture, history, and music that are integral to Capoeira. Mestre Recruta, who began his Capoeira journey in 1996 and earned his "Mestre" title in 2016, is celebrated for making classes "fun and accessible for all levels," ensuring that everyone, regardless of prior experience, can find their place in the roda. The enthusiasm of his students, from children to adults of all ages and sizes, clearly reflects his dedication and the positive energy that permeates the space. Despite a recent challenge of losing their physical space due to a fire, the resilience of this strong community, fueled by Mestre Recruta's "life force," is already working towards opening a new home, proving the enduring spirit of this cultural hub.

United Capoeira Association - Hayward Reviews
UCA Hayward has been a home for me from the moment I walked through the door. Mestre Recruta is a tremendous teacher and leader, and the bright energy of the community is like no other. I had never done capoeira before, but was welcomed in with open arms and have been supported throughout my entire time here. Mestre Recruta makes classes fun and accessible for all levels and also teaches culture, history, and music of capoeira. Class prices are extremely reasonable and absolutely worth every minute. Highly recommended!
Mar 09, 2021 · Stefani Guaraná HThis school is amazing place to find community, fitness, culture, movement. Capoeira is dance, capoeira is fight, capoeira is music, capoeira is story, capoeira is acrobatics. Capoeira is all these things but without a great teacher it is none of these things.Recently lost the space due to a fire. But fortunately because of the great community behind the school a new space will open up soon.Mestre Recruta puts in all his life force to this school and you can tell when you watch the enthusiasm his kids participate with. The adults program is welcoming for all ages and sizes and levels. Love this place!
Mar 04, 2021 · Odie KimOur kids have been attending UCA Hayward since they were small, from the toddler pre-cap class to now the youth and teens classes. Mestre Recruta (Chris) is one of the best teachers we've ever seen -- his classes are fun, but disciplined, and full of amazing energy. In addition to the martial art itself, the kids are exposed to language, music, and community. Even though we've moved away from the area, we still drive 1-2 hours twice a week to UCA Hayward for the kids' classes. We cannot recommend Mestre and this studio enough.
Jul 09, 2024 · Jenny ChuMestre Recruta is awesome! The adult classes have all levels, and Mestre Recruta will give out different versions of instructions for each level. The higher level students also help out the newer students. It’s a very welcoming environment! Everyone is so nice! However, Mestre Recruta reminds us that this is ultimately a martial arts. Capoeira is deceiving because it has elements of dance as the kicks are flying too. Usually everyone takes it easy on the newer students, but be ready to dodge the kicks no matter what level you are at! Mestre Recruta does not just teach sequences of kicks; he also encourages creativity. This is because once you are in the roda, you cannot always rely on your sequences. Mestre Recruta also teaches how to play the instruments and teaches capoeira songs. He also explains the history and culture of capoeira. I get a lot of energy from class, even as I become simultaneously tired from the workout!
Jul 14, 2024 · Aisha C.Love this class! Chris is a great instructor full of knowledge, humor and patience. My daughter who is 11 now, started when she was 9, and she really enjoys these classes. I love how he blends in the culture, instruments and music. I highly recommend this to people of all ages, if you want a good workout and a lot of fun and culture.
