My daughter has been a student at TPB since she was four years old. She’s 12 now (just bought her first pointe shoes!) and we have loved every second. I worried that she might come home in tears from strict criticism or experience body image issues, but she was eager to dance so I signed her up despite my reservations. NEVER in the almost nine years she has been dancing has she had a negative experience of any kind. I didn’t even know that was a possibility with any activity, let alone one with ballet’s reputation. The instruction is world class (see the staff bios) but the atmosphere is kind, empowering, and fun. It truly feels like a family — but you know, a healthy one. 😉Very little is required of me (once or twice a year volunteer shift for productions), which is a huge plus. I drop her off, shop the farmers market and resale shop, maybe stop by the library, and then take her home. She is SO HAPPY there. If there’s drama at school, she knows she has a stress-free activity coming up at TPB. My son also took lessons for two years and participated in productions and had the same positive experience (he lost interest in dancing and switched to weightlifting). My kids have very different personalities and both thrived at TPB. If your kid loves to dance, but you have reservations about ballet culture, The Portland Ballet will be a perfect fit. Genuinely shocked by the negative comments here — there had to have been a misunderstanding of some sort. The staff are always so kind and understanding and patient. I cannot recommend TPB highly enough. - Meg Asby

  • Free Beginning Ballet Series (Ages 6-11): Offered twice annually (September and January), this commitment-free, three-class series is an excellent way for children to explore ballet fundamentals and determine if ballet is the right fit for them before committing to a full program.
  • Men's Program (Ages 6-22): Specifically designed for male dancers, these classes are taught by men for men, focusing on the unique needs, strength, poise, and discipline specific to young male dancers.

Students of all ages have multiple opportunities each year to perform in professionally-produced public productions, including annual shows around Thanksgiving weekend and in the spring, as well as an Academy Showcase.

The Portland Ballet is distinguished by several outstanding features and highlights that set it apart as a premier dance institution in Oregon.

  • World-Class Instruction with Nurturing Atmosphere: As highlighted by a long-term parent, TPB offers "world class" instruction with a staff whose bios reflect extensive professional experience. Crucially, this high level of training is delivered within an "atmosphere is kind, empowering, and fun." This combination ensures that students receive top-tier technical guidance while also feeling supported, confident, and genuinely happy in their dance journey.
  • Healthy and Positive Environment: A significant concern for parents in ballet is often the potential for strict criticism or body image issues. TPB actively counters this, with a parent explicitly stating, "NEVER in the almost nine years she has been dancing has she had a negative experience of any kind." The environment truly "feels like a family — but you know, a healthy one." This focus on holistic well-being is a core pillar of TPB's philosophy.
  • Accessibility for All Ages and Levels: The studio successfully caters to a broad spectrum of dancers, from "Creative Movement" for 3-year-olds to "daily open classes are a mainstay for every level of adult/teen dancer." This inclusivity ensures that whether you're a beginner or an experienced dancer, you can find appropriate and challenging instruction.
  • Talented Accompanists: For adult/teen open classes, the presence of "an equally talented accompanist" enhances the learning experience significantly, providing live musicality that is invaluable for ballet training.
  • Low Parent Involvement Requirements: For busy families, the minimal volunteering required ("once or twice a year volunteer shift for productions") is a "huge plus," allowing parents to support their children's passion without excessive demands on their time.
  • Preparation for Professional and Recreational Dancers: TPB's curriculum is designed to provide "the necessary skills for young dancers to launch a professional career and their love of dance," while also supporting those who simply wish to "study ballet and is also pursuing other interests." Graduates have gone on to major professional companies, speaking to the quality of training.
  • Stress-Free Activity: For younger students, TPB provides a "stress-free activity" that serves as a positive outlet, even amidst school drama, contributing to their overall happiness and well-being.
