Shawl-Anderson Dance Center Introduce
Welcome to the Shawl-Anderson Dance Center (SADC), a cherished institution located at 2704 Alcatraz Ave, Berkeley, CA 94705, USA. For locals across California, especially those in the vibrant San Francisco Bay Area, SADC is more than just a dance studio; it's a true community hub and a local treasure that has been nurturing dancers of all ages and styles since 1958. This non-profit organization is dedicated to building and supporting a vital and inclusive community for movers, offering exceptional dance education, providing institutional support for artists, and serving as a crucial rehearsal and performance venue.
Founded by Frank Shawl and Victor Anderson, who brought an ethos of support and nurturing from their New York mentor, May O'Donnell, SADC has always prioritized creating a welcoming environment where dance is accessible to all who desire it. This vision has cultivated a unique atmosphere where students respect and help each other, fostering a strong sense of community that many find invaluable. As one retired dancer beautifully puts it, "dance is vital to my well being, and I choose the location of my home in part by what dance studio is available to attend. These days, it is hard to find good ballet classes with live accompaniment, but Shawl's has them... In all honesty, attending class at Shawl's is one of the main things that keeps me in the East Bay! It is a local treasure."
The studio itself, housed in a converted Craftsman building, exudes a warm and inviting charm. Reviews highlight its "great air circulation with pretty windows giving nice light and a welcome breeze," creating a comfortable space even when "you will def sweat!" While the historic nature of the building means some accessibility limitations like stairs and smaller restrooms, the overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with visitors calling it a "great studio!" and praising its "friendly staff" and "wonderful classes."
Shawl-Anderson Dance Center offers an incredibly diverse range of dance styles, catering to every interest and skill level. From foundational modern, ballet, and jazz to energetic hip-hop, rhythmic Afro dance, expressive belly dance, and specialized movement classes like Pilates and Functional Barre-lates, there's truly something for everyone. They offer both ongoing drop-in classes and multi-week courses, allowing students to choose the learning format that best suits their needs. Beyond classes, SADC actively supports the local arts ecosystem by providing rehearsal space, presenting performances through initiatives like "Dance Up Close," and collaborating with various community organizations. Their commitment to inclusivity extends to offering scholarships and a work-exchange program, ensuring that dance remains accessible regardless of economic status.
For Californians seeking a high-caliber, community-driven, and truly welcoming environment to pursue their passion for dance, the Shawl-Anderson Dance Center stands as a shining example of artistic excellence and local devotion.
Location and Accessibility
The Shawl-Anderson Dance Center is strategically located at 2704 Alcatraz Ave, Berkeley, CA 94705, USA. This position provides excellent accessibility for residents throughout Berkeley and the wider East Bay region of California.
Alcatraz Avenue is a well-trafficked street that borders parts of Berkeley and Oakland, making the center easy to find and reach. For those relying on public transportation, SADC is conveniently located on AC Transit bus line 51, and is about an 8-minute walk from the Rockridge BART station. This proximity to a major BART station ensures that individuals from San Francisco, Oakland, and other surrounding Bay Area communities can access the studio with relative ease, reducing the need for private vehicle travel.
For individuals driving, hourly street parking is generally plentiful in the vicinity of the center. While finding parking in popular areas of Berkeley sometimes requires patience, the residential and mixed-use nature of the neighborhood around Alcatraz Avenue often provides more available spots compared to more densely commercial zones. The studio is housed in a charming old Craftsman building, which, while beautiful, does present some accessibility limitations in terms of stairs and smaller restrooms, as noted in reviews. However, the overall accessibility via public transit and reasonable parking options makes it a practical and desirable destination for the local dance community. The vibrant neighborhood context also adds to the appeal, with various local shops and eateries nearby for pre- or post-class enjoyment.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is a great studio! Staff is very friendly, classes are wonderful and it is close to bart. It's in an old craftsman so that does limit accessibility in the way of stairs and small restrooms but over all a wonderful dance school!
May 22, 2025 · Evelyn ReneeShawl Anderson is one of those rare dance studios that manages to be community driven, friendly, and provide good classes in a wide variety of dance styles. These days, it is hard to find good ballet classes with live accompaniment, but Shawl's has them. As well as modern, belly dancing and other forms. Dec 11, 2024 · Elizabeth Du ValSADC is an incredibly welcoming and safe space. It is where I have reignited my love for movement and have found a wonderful community of dancers and artists. All of the teachers and staff are supportive, friendly, and make the space feel like home. Extra love for Suzanne's Beginning Modern class!
Dec 16, 2024 · ZoeI enjoy Chris Lam’s wonderful ballet classes, I would have loved to continue taking his class. However, I have recently discovered that SADC posted a statement of solidarity with the Palestinian, while calling for the destruction of Israel. I find it very inappropriate to post a political statement inside a website of a dance company.Any one that cares about Israel should boycott SADS, like I did!
Feb 28, 2025 · Benjamin LevyShawl Anderson is a wonderful dance studio. I danced here in high school and returned in my 60s. My daughter danced here too, in high school. The Beginning and Intermediate Modern Classes for Older Movers are amazing and joyous. They are geared towards a wide audience, from those who have lots of experience and are returning to dance after a career break or injury to those newer to the practice, but want a class that is caring to their body and mind. Neela Reed's beginning ballet class is fantastic. We have a live pianist which is beautiful and rare. Neela breaks down movements to the simplest form, enabling us to really appreciate ballet technique. Antoine Hunter's jazz class is lots of fun and high energy. The teachers and students at Shawl Anderson create a warm, supportive community! The BEST!
