5.0
This the the best place in Westport for Classical Ballet. As a parent who went through a 7 year intense ballet school, I can tell that the professionalism of this place is not comparable to anything I have seen anywhere in Connecticut. Both of my kids are students here, and in just 5 months I can see a difference in posture, and ability to perform major ballet moves. The teacher Diane in very professional, trained in Vaganova style, she really cares, wants everyone in class to do well, and is very patient. This place is a hidden gem! - Marina Yanover

Developed by Agrippina Vaganova, this method focuses on engaging the entire body in every movement, ensuring comprehensive development of strength, stability, and confidence while minimizing the risk of injury. The Academy's commitment to this method is a significant differentiator, promising students a thorough understanding of ballet fundamentals before progressing to more complex movements. They strive to meet their commitment to providing the "highest quality of ballet dance education," preparing students not only for potential professional careers but also for college dance programs, and fostering confidence, physical strength, coordination, grace, and creativity from an early age. Being situated on Westport Avenue allows the academy to be easily reached, minimizing travel time for busy families in the region. The accessibility contributes to consistent attendance, which is crucial for progressive ballet training. While specific details about the studio's interior facilities were not extensively provided, the focus on "professionalism" and "high-quality" training implies a well-maintained and appropriate environment for serious ballet instruction. A clean, spacious, and properly equipped studio is essential for safe and effective dance education, allowing students to focus on their technique and artistry. The choice of Norwalk as its base makes it a central point for ballet enthusiasts across a significant portion of Connecticut's southern coast.

New Elite Ballet Academy offers a structured and progressive curriculum based primarily on classical ballet, utilizing the Vaganova method:

  • Pre-Ballet (Ages 5-6): An introductory course where young students begin to learn the five basic arm and feet positions, developing coordination and rhythm while fostering a love for dance. French terminology is also introduced. Classes are typically one hour long and may be offered twice a week.
  • Ballet 1 (Ages 6-8): Introduces barre work and focuses on correct body placement, integrating the five arm and feet positions. Students begin to develop arm and leg coordination. More terminology is taught, and simple jumps and turns are introduced. Typically twice a week.
  • Ballet 2 (Ages 7-9): Students learn all barre exercises and begin simple center combinations, preparing for more complex sequences. Petit allegro jumps and more complex turns like piqué and fifth turns are taught. Classes typically three times a week.
  • Ballet 3 (Ages 9-11): Students are rigorously tested for pointe readiness. Those who qualify begin pointe work at the barre. Complex center combinations are learned, and weekly pointe classes are added alongside technique and placement classes. Typically three to four times a week.
  • Ballet 4 (Ages 12-14): Students learn all ballet steps, with a strong foundation in basics required. Complex combinations are learned quickly, and grande allegro is introduced. This level focuses on developing strength, stability, balance, and elevation, while encouraging musicality and artistry. All students will be on pointe, with pointe work including both barre and center. Typically three to four times a week.
  • Ballet 5/Company (Ages 15 and up): An advanced level for students who have completed all four prior levels, requiring a very strong classical ballet technique. This class focuses on refining and polishing technique, including clean positions and correct body placement. Ballet 5 students are eligible for solo parts in performances at the discretion of the director. Typically three or four times a week.
  • Placement Classes: All new students are required to take a placement class for evaluation to determine the most suitable level based on experience and ability.
  • Summer Intensive Programs: While not explicitly detailed, ballet academies often offer summer programs for continued training and development.
  • Performance Opportunities: Although not explicitly mentioned in the provided snippets for this specific academy, classical ballet schools typically offer opportunities for students to perform in showcases or full-length ballets, such as "The Nutcracker," allowing them to apply their training.

New Elite Ballet Academy distinguishes itself through several key features and highlights:
