Fire & Ice Irish Dance Studio Introduce
Welcome to Fire & Ice Irish Dance Studio, a vibrant and welcoming performing arts center located in Federal Way, Washington. Founded on September 11, 2001, by the visionary Susan Calhoun Walker, Fire & Ice was created with a clear mission: to provide diverse and engaging performing opportunities for dancers of all ages who wish to explore the rich tradition of Irish dance. Unlike many dance schools that primarily focus on competitive training, Fire & Ice dedicates itself to the art of Irish ensemble choreography and traditional Irish step dancing for social and performance purposes. This unique approach cultivates a supportive and inclusive environment where the joy of movement, cultural appreciation, and the thrill of live performance take center stage.
For over two decades, Fire & Ice Irish Dance Studio has been a cherished part of the Puget Sound's cultural landscape. They are committed to training dancers ranging from absolute beginners to seasoned "dance vets," with ages spanning from young children (starting at 3-5 years old in their Tiny Toes program, or 4-6 for beginners) all the way up to adults (including those 70+ years old). This remarkable age inclusivity fosters a true sense of community, making Irish dance accessible to anyone with a passion for learning. The studio’s emphasis on creating captivating ensemble choreography and performing for live audiences offers a distinctive pathway for dancers to engage with this beautiful art form, drawing comparisons to world-renowned shows like Riverdance. As one parent beautifully put it, the director, Susan, "balances clear, consistent instruction with a calm, patient kindness," bringing "that same wonderful energy and talent to all ages at Fire and Ice." The studio prides itself on a "welcome atmosphere where teamwork is highly valued," ensuring that every participant feels like part of a second family.

Fire & Ice Irish Dance Studio Reviews
I first met Susan, the director of Fire and Ice, when I enrolled my young children (6f and 9m) in her community center beginning class. I was impressed with how Susan balanced clear, consistent instruction with a calm, patient kindness. My daughter went on to join the children's dance company a year later, and has been dancing with Fire and Ice for the last 15 years. I am glad to say that Susan brings that same wonderful energy and talent to all ages at Fire and Ice. Both beginners and dance vets enjoy a welcome atmosphere where teamwork is highly valued. Oh, and the choreography? Gorgeous, creative, and at times breathtaking! I look forward to their performances every year. As a parent, I am so glad that my daughter is a part of Fire and Ice!
Aug 24, 2024 · Rachelle WirfsI've been dancing with Susan adult classes and performing groups for 15+ performing seasons. She has a gift for breaking down Irish Step elements for beginning and experienced dancers, children and adults. She is careful to warm up mature dancers carefully to prevent injury. Susan's new studio reopened in Fall 2022 and is a wonderfully inviting space to learn and practice translating new steps from your brain down to your toes.
