---The Tango Company offers a comprehensive range of services designed to teach and promote Argentine Tango to dancers of all levels, from absolute beginners to advanced practitioners. Their approach emphasizes both technical mastery and the social joy of tango.
- Absolute Beginner Courses: For individuals with no prior tango experience, the school provides structured "Absolute Beginner" intensive courses. These often run over several weeks (e.g., a "3-week intensive" with multiple classes per week), covering the complete foundational syllabus, including floorcraft, musicality, etiquette, and introduction to basic techniques. A key feature is that "No dance experience necessary! No partner necessary!" making it highly accessible.
- Progressive Group Classes: Beyond beginner intensives, The Tango Company offers ongoing group classes at various levels, including advanced beginner, intermediate, and advanced. These classes focus on refining techniques, expanding movement vocabulary (e.g., molinetes, sacadas, ganchos, boleos), and deepening musicality.
- Private Lessons: For personalized instruction and accelerated progress, private Argentine Tango lessons are available. These one-on-one sessions (for up to two people) with staff instructors provide focused attention on individual needs, helping dancers refine specific skills or address personal challenges more quickly.
- Workshops: The school frequently hosts specialized workshops on specific tango elements or concepts, such as "Slow and Sexy Tango," "Cucharadas," "Ganchos," or "Volcadas." These intensive sessions allow dancers to delve deeply into particular techniques.
- Practicas: Complementing their classes, The Tango Company often includes "Prácticas" (practice sessions) as part of their course offerings or as separate events. These informal sessions provide students with an invaluable opportunity to practice newly learned steps in a social setting and build confidence on the dance floor.
- Community Building and Social Networking: Beyond formal instruction, the school emphasizes fostering a strong community. As noted by a student, classes help "broaden our social network" and provide a sense of belonging, making it "way better than dancing alone."
The Tango Company stands out with several key features and highlights that consistently draw praise from its students and contribute to its excellent reputation in the New York tango scene.
- Authentic and Direct Instruction: A core highlight is the school's commitment to authentic Argentine Tango instruction. Students consistently commend instructors for giving techniques in a "direct and authentic way," ensuring a true understanding of the dance form's nuances and cultural essence.

It's described as a "lovely place to truly be immersed in the world of dance," where newcomers feel oriented and welcomed. The Tango Company Reviews
I love this school! I took the absolute beginner course to get oriented. Since then, I have enjoyed the community, instructions, and approach to teaching at The Tango Company. For me, dreaming of dancing tango only aligned to reality with the help of the people at this school. I am taking classes now and feel that the instructors give the techniques in a direct and authentic way. I highly recommend it for anyone that is starting out and wants to learn in reasonable increments.
Jan 04, 2025 · Aaron DrakeCarlos was an exemplary instructor. During our time in NYC not only did he bump our tango skills considerably, but definitely helped to broaden our social network. Dancing in tandem is way better than dancing alone.
Feb 17, 2025 · Andrew Lewisthe absolute beginner classes are acceptable in terms of size, pace, curriculum. However the sequence classes that follow after are a hit or miss. First, the sequence in which the subsequent class sections are taught make no sense. Who in their right mind would teach Embellishments before Molinetes/Cascadas? Of course very few people signed up for Embelishments, and then the Molinetes/Cascadas class was overrun with too many people. The advertise that they keep class sizes small, but that class had I think 40 people, compared to the 8-12 that are in the beginner class. The room was too small for this many people, and dancers kept running into each other on the floor. Of course the one teacher can't help that many students to any effective extent. There were 5 followers without a leader, and given that they force you to change partners every 5 minutes, it was really impossible to hone any skills, especially as a follower. Between how much the teacher speaks ( while the music is playing, making them very difficult to be heard & understood) , trying to adjust to a new leader every 5 minutes, time spent without a partner, I think I only spent 10 minutes actually dancing in a 60 minute class. So many interruptions, so not very enjoyable to someone who enjoys being "in the continuous flow" of the dance.
Dec 28, 2024 · Aria SchulzHaving trained with more than 10 tango teachers in NYC (and more elsewhere), I'm convinced that TTC is the best place in NYC to learn Argentine tango. Here's why.First - Syllabus and Structure. At every tango school I've attended, you're taught whatever strikes the fancy of the instructor that day or week...which, in my opinion, is insane. Imagine trying to learn the violin, ballet, or coding, without a roadmap or a syllabus. But at TTC, your first 21 weeks are mapped out (in seven 3-week sessions), with a core set of skills repeatedly emphasized throughout the 21 weeks. This kind of structure and planning is practically unheard of in the tango world but is crucial when you're trying to master a new skill.Second - Instructors & Community. TTC has 6 instructors, each with their own teaching style and flavor, but they all teach the same TTC dance principles and curriculum. This gives you enormous flexibility in terms of who you want to train with and learn from. In addition, TTC has a small but deeply welcoming community of intermediate and senior dancers who watch out for beginners. That close-knit community, along with group practice sessions every Friday where students from all levels train together (alongside 1-2 instructors to answer your questions), is something you can't find elsewhere.NYC has some of the best tango dancers in North America; I've trained with many of them. Yet, for the past two years, I've been at TTC 3-5 days a week because I'm genuinely convinced this is the best place for me. You should join us too.
Jun 10, 2024 · Jacob XavierI’ve been to just about every tango school in NYC and The Tango Company that just celebrated its 20th anniversary is by far the best one. Not only does it help students build solid tango skills that they can take to any milonga in the world but also creates an amazing community that feels safe and friendly and attracts great people! This is the only school that tries to maintain the leader-follower ratio both in classes and in workshops so that everyone gets as much practice as they can. It also offers regular free prácticas (sessions to practice with other students and staff) and clínicas (sessions to work on technique with Carlos, the founder of the school) to its students. Every year the school takes students to Buenos Aires where they take classes and workshops with internationally recognized tango teachers and go to milongas every day. The Tango Company has professional and very attentive staff and its classes/workshops are always fun!
