Aug 27, 2016 · Chelsea DavisLemon Sponge Cake Contemporary Ballet is an amazing company! I have taken class with Robert off and on for three years now, it's a class I'll always return to for the challenge and fun of it. Aug 19, 2016 · Bailey HarperBoulder, CO-based Lemon Sponge Cake Contemporary Ballet is home to some of the absolute best ballet I have ever experienced first-hand, both as student and patron. Robert Sher-Machherndl’s choreography, movement repertoire, and overall teaching methodology are all second to none. I began taking classes with Robert in December of 2015, shortly after I had moved to Denver from Boston. I had over ten years of classical training in Boston and was on a professional track, but made a sudden decision to leave the ballet world at eighteen. When I chose to re-embrace ballet as a hobby after an 8-year hiatus, I was both emotionally apprehensive and physically rather rusty. Had I started taking classes again with another teacher, I’m not sure that I would have felt comfortable enough to push through those first few difficult months, but I told Robert about my ballet history and he was very encouraging and understanding. While Robert himself is a world-class ballet dancer, choreographer, and master teacher, he maintains a singularly welcoming, holistic, and light-hearted class environment. As a teacher, he is both patient and knowledgable enough to help dancers of all levels improve and grow. His combinations and choreography, while firmly rooted in classical ballet, venture into more stylistic territory, making for classes that are always simultaneously refreshing and indulgent. I am so grateful to have found Robert’s classes and highly recommend them to every fellow ballet dancer that I meet. I have also had the pleasure of attending Lemon Sponge Cake’s recent premieres of White Fields and Vertical Migration. In addition to Robert’s captivating choreography and avant-garde style, I am so appreciative of the socially-cognizant nature of his works. What Lemon Sponge Cake Ballet offers to the dance world, both locally and nationally, is unique and crucial, and I am beyond honored to be a part of their community.
