Hello, fellow Wisconsinites! Are you looking for a place where your child can develop grace, discipline, and a passion for dance, all within a studio that boasts a rich history in our community? Then discover Monona Academy of Dance, a long-standing dance institution conveniently located in Madison, WI. Since its founding as Jean's School of Dance in 1948 and its renaming in 1973 under the partnership of Jean and her daughter JoJean, Monona Academy of Dance has been dedicated to providing comprehensive dance education.
Monona Academy of Dance's mission is to "create an atmosphere which fosters self-esteem, discipline, and positive influences, all of which can be carried into many other aspects of the student's life." This foundational philosophy guides their programs, which aim to teach much more than just dance steps. The studio emphasizes the interconnectedness of physical movement with musicality, creativity, science, mathematics, and physics, offering a holistic approach to dance education. They cater to a wide range of ages, from 3 to "103," welcoming adult students to rediscover the joys of dance or learn a new skill.
One positive review from a local parent truly highlights the studio's strengths: "My daughter has been dancing at Monona Academy of Dance for the past three years. I have been super impressed with how she has grown as a dancer. The teachers do a great job of creating a balance between having discipline to be a great dancer and having fun. She has gained a ton of confidence and loves going to class. The end of the year recitals are very professional and enjoyable. I’m so happy we found this studio." This testimony speaks to the effective balance of rigorous training and enjoyable learning that the academy strives for, leading to tangible growth in students' skills and confidence.
It is important for prospective families to be aware of all perspectives when choosing a dance studio. While many students and families have positive experiences, one older review detailed a particularly challenging incident involving the owner, JoJean, and an instructor during a "Nutcracker" performance for a 7-year-old. The parent reported that their daughter was denied the opportunity to perform despite arriving before the show started, and they felt communication was poor and the interaction unkind. This review also mentioned hearing other reports of children being yelled at. While this is a single account from some time ago, it highlights the importance of open communication with any educational institution. Monona Academy of Dance's commitment to "providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all our dancers, members of our staff, clients, subcontractors and vendors" as stated on their 'About Us' page indicates their stated aspiration for a positive environment for all.
Monona Academy of Dance continues to be a part of the Madison community, offering a variety of classes and performance opportunities. They pride themselves on preparing dancers for "the world of hard work, higher education and/or professional dance." With a wide array of dance styles and a long history, they aim to be a comprehensive resource for dance education in Wisconsin.

Nov 06, 2024 · Dominica SwartzIt was quite some time ago when my daughter participated in dance classes at that establishment. I ultimately decided to withdraw her and enroll her in a different dance school due to an incident involving the owner, JoJean, and one of the dance instructors, which deeply affected my daughter's emotions. At the tender age of seven, it was particularly challenging for her, and for me as well. The incident occurred during the Christmas season when they were staging the Nutcracker. My daughter had a choir performance prior to the Nutcracker show, which caused her to arrive late. Nevertheless, we managed to reach the venue before the performance commenced, and my daughter was dressed and prepared to take the stage. Unfortunately, JoJean and the instructor denied her the opportunity to perform, assigning her role to another dancer simply because she arrived later than their expectations. My daughter was devastated as she watched her peers take the stage, and I felt a profound disappointment at not being able to witness her performance after all her hard work.To make matters worse, as we were leaving, JoJean made a remark that further hurt both my daughter and me. She said, “too bad and sorry you were late!” However, my daughter was not late; the show had not yet begun. Her behavior was exceedingly unkind. Even now, as my daughter has grown, she still recalls that night when she was prevented from performing, despite the fees I had paid for her classes. Frankly, JoJean should have refunded us for the class fees.In conclusion, I would prefer to invest in another dance school where the instructors genuinely care for and nurture their students. No child should endure such humiliation, especially during their formative years. Dance schools should strive to provide positive experiences that foster a love for dance. The actions taken by JoJean and her staff have left an indelible negative impression on both my daughter and me. During my daughter's time at that school, I also heard reports of children being yelled at, so I was not surprised to see a review indicating that the owner and instructors had yelled at another child.
Oct 11, 2024 · Triton BuckyMy girls learned more in one lesson than they had with two previous years of study. The owner was wonderful and always greeted us with a smile! My daughters were taught with great patience and kindness. The contract was fair and prices were very reasonable. The recitals were professionally done and inspiring for my girls to watch. All teachers and staff were helpful and a joy to work with!
Aug 22, 2018 · Kristie EstervigThis is a studio that focuses on giving the students the opportunity to perform in a variety of styles and venues. All done with quality and class. I danced with this studio years ago myself and the foundation it gave me opened many doors for me to dance all over the US. I also know the competitive nature of the dance world and this studio does a great job in giving the students the technique and edge they need if that want to pursue a dance career. My daughter loves it here and feels "at home" when she walks in the door.Congratulations on the new Studio!
Oct 23, 2017 · Autumn PeaseTeachers were great. My daughter danced with them for 5+ years and the owner made promise after promise to my daughter only to change her mind or take it away because i wasnt able to pay for the summer intensive program. Couldn't take it anymore and left.
