The Dayton Ballet School primarily focuses on providing comprehensive classical ballet training, catering to various age groups and skill levels, with a clear pathway for aspiring pre-professional dancers.
Classical Ballet Training: The core curriculum is built around classical ballet technique, emphasizing proper alignment, strength, flexibility, grace, and artistry. This rigorous training forms the foundation for all other dance forms.
Pre-Ballet and Children's Programs: Introductory classes designed for younger dancers (e.g., ages 3-8) to introduce fundamental movement concepts, rhythm, and basic ballet positions in a fun and nurturing environment. These classes aim to foster a love for dance early on.
Student Division Programs: Structured levels of instruction for school-aged children and teenagers, progressing from beginner to advanced levels. These divisions provide more intensive technical training and artistry development.
Pointe Work: For advanced female ballet students who meet specific strength and age requirements, pointe classes are offered to train dancers in performing on the tips of their toes, a hallmark of classical ballet.
Character Dance: Often included in comprehensive ballet programs, character dance introduces traditional folk and national dances performed in classical ballets, adding stylistic versatility.
Modern/Contemporary Dance: While primarily ballet-focused, many contemporary ballet schools integrate modern or contemporary dance to broaden dancers' expressive range and adapt to evolving dance trends.
Performance Opportunities with Dayton Ballet Company: A significant service is the unique opportunity for qualified students to audition and be selected for roles in the professional Dayton Ballet Company's productions. This includes major annual performances like "The Nutcracker" and other full-length ballets staged at the Schuster Center and Victoria Theatre.
Summer Intensives and Workshops: The school likely offers summer programs that provide concentrated training over several weeks, allowing students to deepen their skills and explore various dance disciplines during school breaks.

Official School of Dayton Ballet Company: This is a paramount highlight. As the official training ground for the professional company, students benefit from a direct link to professional dance, potentially interacting with company dancers and gaining insight into the professional world.
Unparalleled Performance Opportunities: A standout feature is the chance for students to be chosen to perform alongside professional dancers in major productions at prestigious venues like the Schuster Center and Victoria Theatre. This hands-on stage experience is invaluable for aspiring performers and is a rare offering for a local ballet school.
Ohio's Oldest Dance School: Its long history signifies a deep-rooted tradition of excellence and a proven commitment to dance education, making it a well-established and respected institution in the state.
Shared Professional Space: Students benefit from training in the same studios and facilities used by the professional Dayton Ballet Company, providing an inspiring environment and exposure to a professional work ethic.

Dayton Ballet School Reviews
Awful and dysfunctional ! My daughter did a trial class here. They never answer the phones we had little to no information. The “waiting room” is on the fifth floor it’s literally a closet full of costumes and boxes and there’s maybe 10 chairs and some coloring books for siblings. The teacher did not introduce herself another lady came to collect the children and took them to floor 4. There’s no cameras or tvs to watch your child and you’re not aloud on the same floor let alone same room to watch. When she was brought back we asked questions and she just said she’ll email you. We got one email for placement nothing about the actual price who the teacher is etc. this place is sketchy especially being in downtown Dayton. Will NEVER return!
Feb 05, 2025 · Courtney BowlesGreat opportunities and classes at Dayton Ballet School. Not only do they get to share the same space as the professional company, the students have the opportunity to be chosen to be part of the professional productions by Dayton Ballet Company. My kids have enjoyed being part of The Nutcracker and other shows performed at the Schuster Center and Victoria Theater.
Sep 22, 2017 · Carin SwansonI’ve been taking one of the one hour adult classes one evening a week and am having a great time! You can’t beat the price ($15 if you drop in or a 10 class punch card for $120 aka $12 a class) and the class size is small. Ms. Anne Davis is such a joy and so patient and my class instructor, Melissa, is so encouraging and a great teacher. I look forward to continuing to take these classes as long as I can and would recommend DBS to anyone.
Jan 28, 2021 · Angela WagnerI was a part of the Dayton Ballet Company many years ago. I studied at the school, as did my mother, under the guidance of Ms. Jo, Ms. Bess And Mr. Jon. It’s a fantastic school with fantastic teachers. I was so fortunate. I picked back up at age 40 and have taught 3-7 yr olds ballet and still dance today, competing in latin dancing and ballroom. It’s the best school and I have so many good memories.
