Feb 14, 2022 · Lilia Vazquez**TRIGGER WARNING: DISCRIMINATIONI am writing to share my experience during a recent trial class with Mrs. Grace. It’s not an easy message to write, but I believe it’s important to voice my concerns so that they can be addressed constructively. From the beginning of the session, I noticed a stark difference in how Mrs. Grace interacted with my daughter compared to the other students. While she was warm, complimentary, and encouraging towards the other two students, her demeanor towards us felt indifferent at best. At first, I thought she might be having an off day, but as the class progressed, it became clear that there was a pattern of favoritism and exclusion that left us feeling disheartened.I want to be fair and acknowledge that it was our first class and that my daughter was excited and adjusting to a new environment. However, when I mentioned that English is not her first language, Mrs. Grace seemed to lose interest rather than attempting to accommodate or engage with us further. Children are incredibly adaptive, and I was actively translating instructions for my daughter to help her participate. Unfortunately, despite my efforts, Mrs. Grace appeared visibly upset when my daughter struggled to take turns or follow instructions immediately. It’s worth noting that my daughter has a speech delay and is currently undergoing evaluation through early intervention services, which is part of why we sought out these dance classes—to help her grow and adapt in new settings. I was hoping for an understanding and nurturing environment, but instead, we felt judged and excluded.Towards the end of the session, Mrs. Grace made a comment about how another student, Olivia, “looked like she owned the class.” While this may have been intended as a compliment, it felt like a passive-aggressive remark about my daughter’s behavior. A more inclusive and positive framing, such as “she did well and didn’t feel shy,” would have been much more appropriate and encouraging.I don’t want to place blame entirely on the teacher, as I’m sure these situations can be challenging, but I left the class feeling deeply disappointed. My intention is not to criticize but to bring this to your attention so you are aware of our experience.
