Atlanta Belly Dance at Kirkwood offers a focused yet diverse range of classes and workshops designed to immerse students in the art of belly dance, catering to various levels of experience and specific interests.
Beginner Belly Dance Classes: The studio specializes in making belly dance accessible to newcomers. Classes like "Basic Belly Dance Technique and Combos" focus on fundamental moves and combinations, providing a strong foundation for those with no prior experience. They explicitly state, "No! All experience levels are welcome for our beginner belly dance classes."
ShimmyFIT Belly Dance Workouts: These are workout-focused classes in a follow-the-leader format, designed to be a fun, low-impact, yet full-body workout. They focus on "real raqs sharqi style dances," helping participants feel "feminine & powerful" while getting a "kick-your-booty workout" that engages the entire body.
Choreography Courses: These are popular 5-week courses where students learn specific moves and techniques over the first few weeks, followed by learning a complete choreography to a particular piece of music. These courses often incorporate props.
Technique Courses (e.g., Hypnotic Hips, Sumptuous Shimmies): For those who want to perfect their fundamental movements without learning choreography, these courses teach all the belly dance moves in isolation. There are four beginner-level technique courses covering different body parts and types of movement.
Combination Courses (Themed): Hybrid courses often themed by region (e.g., "Totally Turkish," "Lovely Lebanese"). Each week, these classes teach new moves and then combinations that integrate the learned techniques, sometimes drawing from full choreographies. The Turkish Drum dance class mentioned in reviews would fall under this category.
Prop Work Workshops: The studio offers specialized workshops for dancing with props, such as:
Belly Dance Sword Workshop: Teaches balancing a sword and smoothly integrating it into dance.
Beginner Belly Dance with Zills Mini Workshop: Focuses on learning basic belly dance moves while simultaneously playing zills (finger cymbals).
Veil & Fanveil: Other common props that are likely covered in workshops or advanced classes.
Levels of Courses: Classes are offered at Beginner (Level 1), Mixed Level, and Intermediate/Advanced (Level 2 or higher) to ensure progressive learning for all students.
Drop-in Classes: Many classes are available on a drop-in basis, allowing flexibility for students to join at any time without a long-term commitment.
