When we moved here from the Midwest my daughter was very nervous about starting Irish Dance at a new school. She was 13 but had only take dance for two years, and only at a studio where she saw her best friends every time. Lauren and Jim have been so fantastic at helping her come out of her shell. She’s learning it’s ok to celebrate her strengths and how to work hard to turn weaknesses into strengths. Irish Dance has the potential to teach children and teenagers so much more than just dance skills, and An Daire does just that. The life skills my daughter is gaining are something I wouldn’t be able to teach her at home. - Tiffany Calder

Founded in 2006 by the husband and wife team of Jim Mueller, ADCRG, and Lauren Crowe-Mueller, ADCRG, the academy embodies a passion for Irish dance that extends far beyond the studio floor, instilling life skills and fostering a supportive family-like environment.

In a world that often moves too fast, An Daire Academy offers a unique space for discipline, artistic expression, and physical fitness. Whether you're a curious beginner taking your very first steps, a parent looking for an engaging and character-building activity for your child, or an experienced dancer aspiring to compete at a high level, An Daire Academy provides expert instruction within a warm and encouraging atmosphere. As numerous testimonials attest, the academy is not just about dance technique; it's about helping individuals "come out of their shell," "celebrate their strengths," and "work hard to turn weaknesses into strengths." An Daire Academy of Irish Dance offers a structured and comprehensive range of services designed to accommodate dancers of all ages and proficiency levels, from their very first steps to advanced competitive performance.

  • Year-Round and School Year Classes: The academy provides ongoing classes throughout the school year and often offers summer camps and intensives, ensuring continuous learning opportunities.
  • Progressive Skill Levels: Classes are carefully structured into progressive levels to ensure appropriate instruction and challenge for every student. These include:
    • Pre-Beginner: For young dancers (ages 3 ½ -5), a less structured format focusing on coordination, balance, and basic reel and jig steps through fun games.
    • Beginner: For ages 5-11, an hour-long class teaching basic step dance skills, steps, and technique for newcomers, including reel, jig, and slip jig soft shoe steps.
    • Advanced Beginner: For students with at least one year of certified Irish dance instruction, introducing more challenging light shoe steps and the foundational hard shoe steps.
    • Novice I, Novice II, Prizewinner, and Championship Levels: These advanced levels are for dancers with significant experience, focusing on refining technique, mastering complex steps, and preparing for competitive success at feisanna (Irish dance competitions) and major championships. Eligibility for these levels is often tied to competition placements.
  • Soft Shoe and Hard Shoe Instruction: Students learn both soft shoe dances (Reel, Light Jig, Slip Jig) which emphasize lightness and agility, and hard shoe dances (Treble Jig, Hornpipe, Set Dances) which involve percussive rhythms created by specialized shoes.
  • Solo and Ceili (Group) Dancing: An Daire provides instruction for both solo competitive dancing and traditional Irish group dances (Ceili), fostering both individual skill and collaborative spirit. Students have opportunities to compete as soloists and as part of teams.
  • Life Skills Development: Beyond dance technique, the academy emphasizes the development of important life skills such as discipline, perseverance, confidence, hard work, and the ability to turn weaknesses into strengths, as noted by appreciative parents.
  • Performance Opportunities: While competitive dancing is a focus for many, the academy also offers opportunities for dancers to perform at various community events, sharing Irish culture and their talents with a wider audience.
  • Multiple Locations (Northwest Region): While the primary focus here is the Portland studio, An Daire Academy operates in multiple locations across the Northwest (including Washington and Montana), offering flexibility for families in the wider region.

This welcoming atmosphere helps new dancers "come out of their shell."
  • Holistic Development: An Daire goes beyond teaching dance steps, focusing on the holistic development of its students.
