Apr 19, 2023 · LaKisha SimmonsWhen I moved to Ann Arbor from the Bay Area, I didn’t have high hopes about finding good dance training for my pre-teen daughter and classes for myself. But then we found The Studio Center. The owner and main instructor, Tyler Stickel, has managed to not only successfully carry his relatively new studio through the pandemic but has actually been able to expand his space and offerings! There’s good stuff going on there.Tyler is a beautiful dancer himself. He has lots of natural facility, but it’s also clear he comes from a well-rounded dance background with great training. Good dancers don’t always make good teachers, but Tyler is excellent in both arenas. He’s able to effectively parlay his strong training and professional experience into his teaching. Not only does he know what he’s talking about, he’s able to articulate concepts in a way that’s accessible to students just starting out in dance as well as to those who have been training for many years.I’ve been a regular in the adult intermediate ballet class for over a year now. As a 40-something former bunhead coming back to ballet after a long hiatus, Tyler and The Studio Centre has been a godsend! I don’t remember feeling this good in ballet in decades, and I’m actually continuing to learn as I adjust to my more mature body. The classes are intimate enough to receive personalized attention and foster camaraderie, but there’s enough of a critical mass to make it fun. Tyler always has fresh combinations (which he has meticulously and thoughtfully prepared before each class), and he offers modifications to be more or less challenging. He creates a class that is full of positive vibes - no judgment, just the tacit understanding that we’re all there to have a good time and enjoy our own relationship to the art form. His wonderful balance of good humor and peppy energy never fails to put a smile on my face.I’ve been thrilled that Tyler’s been able to add more styles of adult dance classes this year. Stephanie Harvey, who teaches contemporary as well as works for the youngest students at the studio, is lovely. Her approach is grounded in real modern/contemporary technique, and her sweetly supportive demeanor is a pleasure. She’s very easy to connect to as an adult student, and I can see how she’d also be beloved by the littles. I haven’t had the opportunity to take many classes from Kali, the new hip hop teacher, but from what I’ve experienced, she’s excellent as well. That class is still growing and is aimed at the beginner level, but Kali has an encouragingly energetic personality and builds the class effectively. My daughter has also been a student at the studio in ballet, jazz, contemporary, and acro dance classes. She’s returned to dance (post-COVID and after we’ve struggled to find quality studios), has improved significantly in a short period of time, and (most importantly) is genuinely enjoying herself! Tyler’s instruction and encouragement are the reasons for this. He really seems to SEE her and remains genuinely invested in her progress. Also, the ethos of the studio is HEALTHY and FUN while still being the appropriate level of serious (yay for required uniforms and punctuality!). Tyler demands commitment from the young students (any studio worth its salt should!), and the focus, discipline, work ethic, and commitment he models himself has inspired my daughter. To gain the respect of an opinionated pre-teen is no small feat!As is probably apparent, I’m passionate about dance AND quality dance education. I’m still dancing today because of the great training I was able to receive in wonderful studios growing up. I’ve been looking for that magic again for myself and for my daughter as we’ve moved between both Coasts and now into the Midwest. I would put the instruction and training from Tyler and The Studio Center up against any top local studio in the country. Tyler has created a truly impressive studio and community for dance in his small corner at the outskirts of Ann Arbor. My daughter and I are truly grateful to be a part of it!
