For families in the New Hampshire Upper Valley region seeking truly exceptional dance instruction, The Dance Collective in West Lebanon stands as a remarkable and often unparalleled destination. More than just a local dance studio, this institution has garnered a reputation for its commitment to high-level training, intentional community building, and unique opportunities that set it apart. While every dance journey is personal, The Dance Collective offers a distinctive environment for dancers, particularly those aged 7 and up, to thrive and pursue their passion with serious dedication. This article will provide a comprehensive look into what makes this studio a standout choice for local residents, exploring its unique approach, diverse offerings, and the enriching experience it provides.
The Dance Collective is distinguished by its fervent dedication to fostering a strong sense of community among its dancers. The Studio Director plays a pivotal role in intentionally creating an environment where older dancers mentor younger ones, and strong bonds are formed, extending even to traveling to support each other at auditions in places like New York City. This tight-knit community spirit is a hallmark of the studio, ensuring that students not only receive top-tier technical training but also develop lifelong friendships and a deep sense of belonging. The academy prides itself on providing a transformative experience, where students are pushed to excel while feeling supported every step of the way.
The commitment to excellence and unique opportunities at The Dance Collective are echoed in glowing testimonials. One highly experienced "dance mom" with 27 years of experience across three states, including the NYC area, enthusiastically states: "this is by far the best studio any of my kids have had the privilege of dancing at... The Studio Director does an amazing job of intentionally creating community among the dancers. The older ones mentor the younger ones, and the older dancers are so tight-knit that they'll spend the time to travel to NYC for a weekend just to support each other at auditions." She further highlights the "unparalleled" training and opportunities for kids starting at about age 7, including "access to privates and small size masterclasses with soooo many top-notch Broadway dancers (Rachelle Rak, Jessica Lee Goldyn, Thayne Jasperson, Jakob Karr, etc., etc.) who are friends of the Director and come all the way up to the Upper Valley (!) to visit." This incredible access to industry professionals is a rare and significant advantage.
It is important for prospective families to note that while the studio excels in providing advanced and rigorous training for a specific age group and level of commitment, experiences for very young children (e.g., 4-year-olds) may vary. One review highlighted challenges with teaching methodology for preschoolers, suggesting a less structured approach for that age group. This implies that the core strength and focus of The Dance Collective appear to truly shine in their programs for older, more dedicated dancers.

The Dance Collective Reviews
I have been a dance mom for 27 years now, in three different states, and this is by far the best studio any of my kids have had the privilege of dancing at. (The others were in the NYC area and in the Seacoast, which are much more populated — so this is saying something!) The Studio Director does an amazing job of intentionally creating community among the dancers. The older ones mentor the younger ones, and the older dancers are so tight-knit that they'll spend the time to travel to NYC for a weekend just to support each other at auditions. The training and opportunities for the kids starting at about age 7 are unparalleled — they have access to privates and small size masterclasses with soooo many top-notch Broadway dancers (Rachelle Rak, Jessica Lee Goldyn, Thayne Jasperson, Jakob Karr, etc., etc.) who are friends of the Director and come all the way up to the Upper Valley (!) to visit. But don't take my word for it — go watch the end of the year showcase and then compare it with other studios; you'll see!
Nov 03, 2024 · Heidi LockwoodEnrolling my 4-year-old child in a class here was a big mistake. The teenagers who "taught" the class were friendly and seemed to be good dancers, but they seemed to have no concept of proper pedagogy or child development. It was obvious there was no lesson plan; they were making decisions about what to do next as they went along. A dance step would be shown once and then they would move on to something completely different. There was no repetition or practice of skills, and no progression from simple to more complex. Kids who are still working on learning their left from their right at that age were being asked to perform multi-step dance moves more appropriate for an 8-year-old... and when they inevitably failed, the instructors would tell them what a great job they did. While positive reinforcement can play a role in education, constantly telling students they are successfully doing something when they are not actually hinders the learning process. We tried to stick with this class to the end, but my child (who loved dancing before starting the class) was not enjoying it and seemed to be losing interest in dance, so we made the decision to quit and seek dance instruction elsewhere.
