The Pennsylvania Academy of Ballet provides a comprehensive range of programs designed to cater to dancers of all ages and aspirations, from foundational introductory classes to rigorous pre-professional training.
- Early Childhood Programs: Specifically designed for very young dancers (often starting from ages 3.5), these classes, such as Pre-Ballet, introduce the joy of movement, musicality, and basic ballet concepts in a playful and engaging manner.
- Student Program (Regular Division): This program is structured into six progressive levels (Levels 1-6), with academic ballet lessons beginning at age 8. Placement is determined by age, prior experience, and a placement class, ensuring students are in the most appropriate level for their development. These levels emphasize the fundamentals of classical dance, correct placement, and execution of ballet steps, paving the way for advanced technique.
- Pointe Work: Introduced at Level 4, pointe work is carefully integrated at the discretion of the teacher and director, ensuring students have the necessary physical awareness and strength for this milestone in ballet training.
- Pre-Professional Day Program: For high school students considering dance as a career, this intensive program allows them to focus more deeply on ballet, often taking additional hours of training per week and receiving highly individualized coaching for competitions.
- Apprentice Program: An audition-only, pre-professional program for dancers aged 18-22, offering full tuition scholarships, stipends, allowances, and audition guidance, designed to prepare students for professional ballet careers.
- Adult Beginner and Advanced Classes: Catering to all adults, from those with no prior experience to seasoned dancers, these classes provide supportive instruction for physical fitness, artistic expression, or to rekindle a past passion. As one review highlighted, "I started adult beginner classes with no prior experience, and Elena and the other instructors have been very supportive."
- Variations and Partnering Classes: As students advance, they have opportunities to learn classical variations and engage in partnering, further developing their artistry and stage presence.
- Pilates for Dancers: Offered to support dancer wellness, Pilates sessions focus on core strength, flexibility, and injury prevention, complementing classical ballet training.
- Summer Sessions and Workshops: PAB offers summer programs and specialized workshops, including the Margarita de Saá Choreography Workshop, which allows students to explore new movement and participate in the choreographic process.
The Pennsylvania Academy of Ballet is distinguished by several key features that underscore its commitment to excellence in ballet education and its supportive community:
- Exclusive Vaganova Method Training: PAB is one of the few schools in the U.S. that expertly teaches the Vaganova method, a gold-standard classical ballet syllabus renowned for producing technically strong and artistically expressive dancers. This structured approach ensures continuity and logical progression for students.
- Highly Qualified and Supportive Faculty: Instructors are not only experienced professionals (many with backgrounds in top-tier companies and professional schools) but are also known for their kindness, dedication, and ability to balance discipline with nurturing a love for dance.
- Small Class Sizes: A significant highlight, PAB maintains small class sizes (e.g., just 8 students in a Level 1 class). This allows for invaluable individualized attention and personalized feedback, accelerating student progress.
- Comprehensive Performance Opportunities: Students have several opportunities to perform, including a spring show, parent observation sessions, and the beloved annual Nutcracker production, where professional principal dancers often share the stage, offering real-world experience and inspiration.
- Nurturing and Grounded School Culture: The environment at PAB is refreshingly free of overt competitiveness. Instead, it fosters a "quiet determination" among both faculty and students, promoting excellence through mutual support and a positive atmosphere.
- Strong Alumni Success: PAB boasts an impressive list of alumni who have gone on to dance with leading professional companies worldwide (e.g., American Ballet Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, Royal Ballet of Flanders, Philadelphia Ballet) and attend prestigious university programs, speaking to the quality of their training.
- Focus on Dancer Wellness: The inclusion of Pilates and a curriculum designed to progress safely helps prevent injuries and supports the long-term health of dancers.
- Continuity of Training: Since all PAB teachers work from the same Vaganova method, students are ensured a consistent and seamless progression as they advance through the levels.

Mar 31, 2025 · Heather ReaboldIf you or your child want a structured studio that provides in-depth training, precision and discipline, PAB is a great fit. My oldest daughter took classes at other studios when she was young and was frustrated with the looseness of the classes. Instructors were super nice but too laid back for her. My daughter wants to truly learn dance - she is building a full foundation here with many wonderful friendships as well.
