Natya Dance Theatre Introduce
For families and individuals across Illinois, particularly those in the vibrant city of Chicago, who seek an authentic and enriching experience in Indian classical dance, Natya Dance Theatre stands as a revered institution. Founded in 1975 by the internationally acclaimed dancer, teacher, and choreographer Smt. Hema Rajagopalan, Natya Dance Theatre is dedicated to preserving and perpetuating Bharatanatyam in all its classical rigor, while also innovating to foster cultural exchange through dance. This critically acclaimed and culturally treasured organization is a beacon for those looking to connect with a rich artistic heritage right here in our community.
At the heart of Natya Dance Theatre's success is its unique pedagogical approach, deeply rooted in the philosophy of its founder, Hema Rajagopalan. A prodigy who began her Bharatanatyam training at the age of six in Chennai, India, Hema Rajagopalan's journey led her to establish Natya in Chicago, initially teaching a small number of children from her living room to connect them with their cultural heritage. Over four decades later, this homespun operation has evolved into an internationally recognized professional company and training academy. Students and parents consistently praise her "disciplined yet gentle" teaching style, noting how she "really takes the time to teach them to love the art form." This nurturing environment extends to all students, including adults, as one satisfied parent shared, being so impressed with her teaching, they recently joined the adult classes themselves. Supported by a dedicated team including her daughter and Associate Artistic Director, Krithika Rajagopalan, Natya Dance Theatre is committed to bringing out the best in each student, fostering meaningful friendships, and instilling life lessons far beyond dance steps, ensuring a thriving and resilient learning process even through challenging times.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1My daughter has been learning Bharatanatyam from Smt Hema Rajagopalan for the past five years and I compare her training to how I was trained more than 30 years ago in India. She is very disciplined yet gentle with her students, and really takes the time to teach them to love the art form as much she most obviously does. I was so impressed with her teaching style, that I have recently joined her adult classes!
Jun 09, 2020 · Sudha ParimiI am a Natya graduate and parent. My younger daughter and I have been so blessed to have such a dedicated teacher who truly knows how to bring out the best in each of her students. The children at this school are learning much more than just dance and will also create such meaningful friendships that will always last. Guru Hema and Krithika have especially gone above and beyond to make sure that the learning process in Natya has continued throughout this pandemic. My child has learned so much more now than before as well during this challenging time. Both of my girls had to stop their other extra curricular activities for now because their instructors didn’t know how or didn’t want to accommodate any form of online learning.

Jul 15, 2020 · Sheela IyengarTraditional Indian classical dance school and company with innovative choreography and dynamic dance movements. My daughter has blossomed from being a shy dancer to a confident performer with rigorous practice and continuous opportunities provided by Natya. As we are cooped inside due to the pandemic, we have been immersed in Natya classes, extra sessions, Solos Together showcase series these past weeks and the learning continues. The school is for serious learners who can become performers with years of practice.

Jun 13, 2020 · Parvathy SreeMy daughter has been learning from Guru Hema Rajagopalan for 10 years. We feel so fortunate to be a part of the Natya Dance Theatre family. The pure devotion that Guru Hema has to bharata natyum is felt in every class. She teaches her students so much more than the dance, she teaches life skills and lessons. Further, watching the company perform is such a treat. We have been fortunate enough to see many productions over the years and each one has been spectacular.

Jun 09, 2020 · Amy ReshamwalaMy daughter has been learning Bharatanatyam with Krithika for more than a year (started when she was 4.5 year old). Even at this beginner level, Krithika’s passion for dance comes off strong, and is a fundamental driver for her students. Classes are focused on building a strong foundation, making corrections on seemingly small aspects ensuring bad habits do not develop. The focus is not rote learning, doing mechanical steps or climbing the level ladder at a fast pace.In this time my daughter has developed a deep interest in dance and it’s now imbibed into every aspect of her life. She practices dance mudras at the dinner table, wants to watch classical dance videos during her screen time, “performs” dance steps at random times! The fluidity and learning keeps going naturally beyond class boundaries. I believe this is the definition for true learning, and can only come off of a teacher that shares her passion beyond regular class instructions.
