More than just a dance studio, Metta Dance Collective is a thriving community, passionately dedicated to teaching Bachata and Bachata Fusion (modern and sensual styles) to individuals of all backgrounds. It's a place where you can not only learn to dance but also find a supportive family that unites through movement, laughter, and shared joy.
The collective's approach, led by the inspiring Carina, emphasizes not just the steps but also musicality, clear lead-body connection, and creating an inclusive space where everyone feels they belong. This commitment to fostering a beautiful, supportive environment has resonated deeply with students, many of whom describe a rapid growth in their Bachata flow and confidence after joining. For New Mexico residents looking for a new hobby, a way to connect with others, or to simply enhance their social dance skills, Metta Dance Collective offers an absolute gift to the community.
Metta Dance Collective has its primary Albuquerque location at 1705 San Pedro Dr NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110, USA. This central Albuquerque address makes it quite accessible for residents across the city and surrounding areas of New Mexico. The studio also extends its reach to Santa Fe, offering classes there as well, which is a significant benefit for dancers throughout the region.
Being located on San Pedro Drive NE, a well-known thoroughfare, ensures that the studio is relatively easy to find. Its urban setting means it's likely connected by various transportation routes, making it a convenient destination for anyone eager to join their classes. The welcoming atmosphere starts even before you step onto the dance floor, reflecting the collective's commitment to accessibility and community for all New Mexicans.
Metta Dance Collective focuses primarily on Bachata, offering a progressive curriculum and various events to cater to different learning styles and interests:
- Progressive Bachata Classes:
- Beginner: Perfect for newcomers with no prior experience. These classes build a strong foundation in a relaxed, encouraging setting, focusing on repetition, clear breakdowns, and learning at a comfortable pace. The first class is often free!
- Advanced Beginner: For dancers with consistent training ready to delve deeper, refining skills and adding dynamic layers to their dancing.
- Intermediate: Designed for those who have solidified their fundamentals and seek more challenging combinations, musicality refinement, and creative flow. (Instructor approval often required for this level to ensure appropriate placement).
- Weekly Group Classes: Consistent classes offered multiple times a week in both Albuquerque and Santa Fe, allowing for regular practice and skill elevation.
- Monthly Bachata Flow Socials: Dedicated Bachata-only social dance events held monthly, providing a fun, family-friendly environment to apply learned skills and connect with the community. These often feature two rooms, sometimes including Zouk.
- Workshops: Special events periodically held to expand dance horizons, often featuring guest instructors to bring new techniques and perspectives.
- Performing Teams: Opportunities for students to train and develop advanced skills, building confidence and camaraderie through local and national performance opportunities.
- Travel Opportunities: The collective occasionally organizes or highlights opportunities for students to experience international instruction, connect with dancers worldwide, and immerse themselves in Bachata culture.

- Membership Options: Various plans including an "Unlimited Membership" for access to all weekly classes, "10 Class Package" for flexibility, and a "Beginner Membership" specifically for beginner Bachata classes.
- Ambassador Program: A unique program allowing passionate individuals to volunteer 5 hours per month towards the Metta community in exchange for an unlimited monthly membership, promoting accessibility and leadership.
Metta Dance Collective is highly praised for several distinctive features that make it a standout "point of interest" for dancers in New Mexico:

- Exceptional Instructor (Carina): Reviews consistently highlight Carina's incredible energy, knowledge, passion, and encouraging teaching style. She is praised as an "incredible maestra" and a "joyful, playful and inclusive leader."
- Safe and Inclusive Community: The environment is repeatedly described as "beautiful," "supportive," "safe," "inclusive," and "down to earth." Students feel immediately welcomed and comfortable, even those with prior fear or uncertainty about close connection in partner dancing.
- Emphasis on Musicality and Connection: The teaching methodology stresses clear lead body connection and musicality, crucial elements for truly enjoyable social dancing.
- Rapid Skill Development: Students report growing "so much faster" in their Bachata flow and confidence, even those moving from established dance scenes elsewhere.
- Non-Dance Community Events: The collective goes beyond just dance classes, organizing social gatherings like camping trips, fostering deeper bonds and friendships among members. This highlights a true "collective" spirit.
- Dedicated Dance Coaches: The presence of additional dance coaches like Tammy and Laura provides extra support and guidance to students during classes and social events.
- "Zero Intimidation" Learning: Carina's teaching style is noted for clear cues without any intimidation, ensuring everyone "just gets to belong," regardless of their current skill level or background.

For residents of Albuquerque and the wider New Mexico area, Metta Dance Collective is an ideal "point of interest" for anyone looking to learn Bachata, enhance their social dancing skills, and become part of a truly supportive community. Its unique blend of expert instruction, a focus on inclusive environment, and a passion for the dance makes it exceptionally suitable for locals for several compelling reasons.
Firstly, the collective addresses a specific cultural interest: Latin dance, particularly Bachata, which has a growing following in the U.S. For New Mexicans seeking to connect with this vibrant dance form, Metta Dance Collective provides a dedicated, high-quality learning environment right in their backyard. The emphasis on "traditional" Bachata, noted by a former Atlanta dancer, suggests a commitment to authentic roots which can be highly appealing.
Secondly, the overwhelming positive feedback about the instructors, especially Carina, highlights a safe, encouraging, and non-intimidating learning atmosphere. Many people, particularly beginners, can feel apprehensive about partner dancing. Metta's focus on clear cues, body connection, and the explicit message that "you just get to belong" removes this barrier, making it a perfect starting point or a comfortable new home for experienced dancers.
Finally, the sense of community that extends beyond the dance floor, through social events like camping, offers an invaluable opportunity for locals to form genuine connections and friendships. For any New Mexico local ready to embrace a new skill, build confidence, and join a joyful community, Metta Dance Collective is an absolute gift.

Metta Dance Collective Reviews
Looove what Carina & Metta are doing. I love their focus on bachata. Love their focus on musicality and clear lead body connection. Its a beautiful, supportive community where I felt sooo welcomed and have immediately grown in my bachata flow and confidence. I just moved here from the Atlanta dancing scene and I am growing so much faster here in my bachata! There's more traditional here than in Atlanta. I just think Carina is an incredible maestra - she is such a joyful, playful and inclusive leader. She gives such clear cues without any sort intimidation or questioning of belonging - you just get to belong as long as you honor your partner's body language. It took a lot of my fear and uncertainty about the close connection away. They have dance coaches - thanks Tammy and Laura!! They do non dance events - see our rad picture camping in Bandelier below! Can't show more appreciation for the absolute gift this community is to New Mexico :) :) Maybe they should charge more?? HahaMuuuchas gracias!
