When considering the features and highlights of Metropolitan Ballet, it's important to present a balanced view based on available information, including customer feedback.
- Local Presence: Metropolitan Ballet is a local performing arts organization contributing to the cultural scene in Plymouth, MN. This provides a community-based opportunity for residents to experience ballet.
- Amateur Company with Occasional Professional Leads: Information suggests that the company primarily comprises amateur dancers, with occasional instances of more accomplished leads being brought in for specific performances. This structure can offer a platform for local talent to gain experience.
However, some significant feedback from past patrons and business partners raises points that potential visitors or collaborators should be aware of:
- Performance Quality Concerns: Several reviews indicate that the overall performance quality may fall short of professional expectations. Specific concerns mentioned include perceived skill levels of performers, stage direction during performances, and highly criticized music quality (poorly recorded, background noise). This suggests that audience members seeking a highly polished, professional-level ballet experience might find it different from their expectations.
- Director's Involvement: There have been comments regarding the director's casting choices and active stage direction during performances, which some found distracting and unprofessional.
- Financial and Business Practice Concerns: A serious concern raised involves alleged non-compensation for marketing services rendered, with claims of a signed binding contract not being honored. This points to potential issues with business practices that prospective partners should consider.
- Pricing Concerns: Feedback suggests that the ticket prices may not align with the perceived value or quality of the performances, leading to a feeling of it being "not worth it" for some attendees.
These points highlight the importance of setting appropriate expectations when considering a visit or engaging with Metropolitan Ballet. While supporting local arts is valuable, understanding the nature and operational aspects of the organization is key.

However, it is crucial for Minnesotans considering engaging with Metropolitan Ballet to manage their expectations based on available feedback. For those looking for a highly polished, professional-grade ballet performance comparable to major touring companies or large-scale institutions, the experience might differ. The information suggests it operates more as an amateur company, which can be a wonderful stepping stone for local talent, but it's important to understand this distinction. If you are a patron who prioritizes supporting community-based artistic endeavors and understand that the experience may be more akin to a developing local troupe rather than a fully professional one, then Metropolitan Ballet could be a suitable option for you. Metropolitan Ballet Reviews
This is an amateur ballet company, they occasionally bring in more accomplished leads. But it's advertised as something beyond their skill level. So, overall performance fell far below expectations; I had to leave at intermission (and many others left too). The director, who seems to cast himself in roles far too young for him, was even giving stage directions mid-performance, which was distracting and unprofessional. The music was perhaps the most baffling part: a poorly recorded old live performance complete with crying babies, vinyl crackling and coughing in the background. It felt more like a parody than a performance, something out of an SNL skit. If you're looking for a professional ballet experience, this isn't it. And at these prices, it's definitely not worth it. I love supporting arts and culture, but it felt like a scam.
Apr 20, 2025 · Marlena MylesErik Sanborn hired my marketing team to promote the Giselle show this past winter, and has yet to compensate us for the work we did, placing print materials for hours on college campuses. He signed a binding contract and has gone completely dark. Extremely disappointing business practices being carried out at Metropolitan Ballet.
Aug 01, 2024 · Sally BolandOur family enjoys a wonderful continuing experience with the Metropolitan Ballet. For over four years our daughter has loved everything about the program as have we, her parents. The training takes place under the expert direction of Erik Sanborn, Founder and Artistic Director of the Metropolitan Ballet. Erik's personality, character, and commitment leave every parent confident knowing that their child is being professionally instructed in the art of ballet, by a person worthy of the title, "role model". Eric creates an atmosphere in class that is productive, interesting for the students, and fun! The annual productions are impressive professional events that include performances by professional dancers. Every student has a role to play, and each leaves the experience with increased confidence, high motivation, and many indelible precious memories.
Jun 17, 2021 · Richard BurlesonMy daughter has been attending Metro for 2 years now. The class times and freedom to make up classes anytime you miss has worked great for our schedule. She thoroughly enjoys the experience of working in productions alongside professional dancers and her friends alike. The teachers are kind and helpful. All in all a good experience!
Aug 03, 2016 · Donna JonesOur daughter has learned so much at The Metropolitan Ballet. Poise, discipline, love of dance and music, and much more...my wife and I are simply thrilled with the results. We plan to attend for years to come, and we recommend The Met without reservation.
