The program is fine. But BEWARE. Do not sign up for the dance academy unless you are 100 % certain your child will be healthy and not diagnosed with any life altering condition. Because you will be expected to continue paying even if your child is unable to attend due to said illness or disability. unfortunately after asking to unenroll for similar reasons, we were met with a cold unsympathetic response from the owner Ayesha lee morgan. She explained that we would still have to continue paying and then stopped communicating with us. Please consider our experience before enrolling your child. They only care for your money and the “community” ends when you are no longer able to pay. - marie joseph

Introduction / Overview

Situated in the Historic Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Hill Dance Academy Theatre (HDAT) stands as a vibrant and essential cultural arts organization, celebrating over 20 years of Black Dance Excellence. Founded in 2005 by Dr. Ayisha Morgan-Lee, HDAT's mission is to provide professional-level training in Black Dance traditions, history, culture, and aesthetics. This non-profit institution is dedicated to engaging and empowering students from ages 3 to 18, and even adults, to pursue careers in Black dance, while also instilling valuable life skills and a profound appreciation for their heritage.

HDAT offers a holistic dance curriculum that encompasses a wide array of dance genres, including ballet, tap, hip hop, modern, jazz, and dance fitness, alongside unique offerings like Capoeira and Liturgical Movement. Beyond the technical aspects of dance, the academy integrates fitness, nutrition, self-identity, theatrical expression, chorus, professionalism in the arts, service projects, and history & culture into its programs. This comprehensive approach aims to develop well-rounded individuals prepared not just for the concert stage but for life itself. While the outdoor appearance of the facility may seem a "little bit degraded" in its immediate vicinity according to one review, the interior spaces are noted as being "kept up well," providing a functional and well-maintained environment for learning and growth. HDAT is a recognized Pittsburgh Cultural Treasure, lauded by organizations like the Heinz Endowments for its significant contributions to ensuring the presence of Black arts and culture in the city and region.

Location and Accessibility

Hill Dance Academy Theatre (HDAT) is located at 2900 Bedford Ave Second Floor, Pittsburgh, PA 15219, USA. This address places HDAT squarely in Pittsburgh's Historic Hill District, a neighborhood rich in cultural heritage and a significant hub for Black arts and music artists. Being in the Hill District means the academy is deeply embedded in the community it serves, offering a central and meaningful location for its students.

While one review mentions the immediate outside structure being "a little bit degraded" and the neighborhood not being "great if you go another block or so down the road," the facility itself, including the rooms inside, are described as "kept up well." As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, HDAT purchased its permanent home in July 2021, a 29,000-square-foot facility at 2915 Webster Ave (likely the main complex, with dance studios on the second floor of what is now the Morgan-Lee Arts Centre), signaling a long-term commitment to the area and providing a dedicated space for Black and Brown children to dance. Accessibility to the Hill District is generally facilitated by Pittsburgh's public transportation system and various roadways, making it reachable for families across the city and surrounding Allegheny County.
