This article will provide a detailed overview of Happendance, covering its convenient location, the diverse services it offers, its unique features, and why it remains a cherished resource for the Michigan community.
Happendance was born from a simple idea in 1976 when founder Diane Newman organized a free summer performance on the banks of the Red Cedar River. People would "happen by" to watch the dancers rehearse, giving the organization its distinctive name. This grassroots beginning evolved into Michigan's longest-running professional modern dance company. Happendance operates with a holistic philosophy, viewing dance as a developmentally-appropriate process that connects technical skills with creative expression. Their mission is to "stimulate support for the art of dance through performances and educational programs" and to "broaden the accessibility of dance to a diverse community and promote dance for lifelong physical and mental fitness." This dual focus on artistic excellence and community well-being is evident in their three core areas: Performance, Education, and Engagement. With highly-credentialed faculty and a learning-centered environment, Happendance strives to provide personalized attention, helping students achieve goals that align with their interests, age, and physical development.

Happendance Reviews
My daughter went to Happendance about 5 years ago for around a month. The teachers were fine, my daughter didn't enjoy it so I removed her. In the time since then I have been doing battle to get removed from their text list. I spoke to someone who assured me I would be removed yet today I was texted about photos tomorrow.

Apr 30, 2025 · MorganHappendance is a place where my 25 year old body could feel 16 again and just dance. The people are great, the atmosphere is amazing, and the learning experience is abundant. Yes, at first it was intimidating to get in and dance with people who dance every day, after being constantly in and out of dance, but the encouragement is next level. I truly hope to be back with them while I am in Lansing.
