Nothing too tough and makes it easy and fun. Takes his time teaching. A good month into it and practice and you’ll improve a lot. Highly recommend.

Mar 27, 2025 · Christlyn PatelI went to Duval Dance for the very first time a couple of weekends ago for a dance social. I did not make it to the workshop just the social. The quality of dancers was above average for Jacksonville. Having a bachata focused studio in town is great. The music played was very good. I believe it came from the owner's personal music stash which means the songs played support the moves and styles current dancers want to do. The sound system was excellect. The dance space was clean. Nice amount of window space to avoid the clostrophic feel of some dance studios. The vibe was friendly & open. No cliques.Yesterday I went to Duval Dance for the first time of attending a class - Tuesday. Friendly vibe. No sour faces in the building. The owner instructor started the class by going over a step that was going to be the focus of the class then we did our warmup practice in front of the mirror. Unlike most studios, the sequence being taught was just a prop to learn how to execute a particular move correctly and to understand how to integrate it into your social dancing. I braced myself at certain point thinking the instructor was about to add on to the sequence just when I felt I got all that I could remember in order to use it in the future. But he stopped there - fantastic. I had a great time at the social & at the class I had fun AND learned what was taught so that I can do what taught on the dance floor with a stranger.I love that the owner instructor was happy to be there. He was down to earth, relaxed, willing to explain with words, willing to explain with drawing on a board, willing to demonstrate. At this studio the rotation includes the instructor couple. They participate in dancing with the students to ensure everyone is getting it. There was the feeling of fellowship and comaraderie of the moment, but no "us against them; joint our crew" mentality that I encountered. I cannot stand cliques & fraternal organizations, so this is a bonus for me.A message to other studios who might be reading reviews, because you need to hear this: I do not come to a dance class to play a game called "add on dance moves until the student can't remember a damn thing so that the student never actually improves in social dancing, remaining perpetually locked into classes". Endless sequences do not lead to good dancers. Being smooth as hell in the basics do. I know a ton of people who have paid a lot of money on group classes & privates with shit to show. Also, I do not come to a dance studio to become your army, your gang, your validation. Keep it about dancing & fun. Focus on building great social dancers. Great social dancers can dance with strangers with ease. Great social dancers can go to other cities and keep up those dancers. Great Follows can do moves they never saw before. Great Leads can make every Follow appear to dance one level above her actual skill level. A great latin dance school teaches styling from day one because styling is actually an integral part of latin dance and postponing styling makes it harder to pickup & integrate when it should have been taught as part of the dance to begin with.
