My children have been taking ballet from Christopher Fellows at CDA for the past year and a half after dancing at numerous other area schools and this far exceeds the level of education they received prior. My older daughter said that at another school, several years ago, she could see that she wasn’t moving her body the way she wanted to but didn’t understand how to change it. Immediately after starting at CDA, she said that Christopher was clearly explaining the corrections that needed to be made and she was able to progress more quickly than ever before. Both girls are very happy with their classes and my older daughter eagerly attends six days a week. The school is small but is comprised of kind, fun, hardworking students who support one annother, all led by two deeply caring and highly knowledgeable instructors. It’s a wonderful community. I only wish we had started years sooner. This is a hidden gem in the region that should be getting much more recognition. Come try a class for free! - Heather Cramer

The Conservatory of Dance Arts/Classical Ballet Academy (CDA) stands as a testament to unparalleled dedication and expertise, emerging as a "hidden gem" in the region for those serious about classical ballet. This article is crafted to provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of CDA, highlighting why it has become a cherished choice for students and parents seeking exceptional dance training and a nurturing community. We will explore its convenient location, the comprehensive services it offers, and the standout features that make it a highly recommended destination for anyone in the Pennsylvania area passionate about ballet, whether just beginning their journey or striving for advanced mastery.

The Conservatory of Dance Arts/Classical Ballet Academy (CDA) is conveniently situated at 997 W View Park Dr, Pittsburgh, PA 15229, USA. This address places the academy within a residential area of Pittsburgh, offering a setting that feels both dedicated to the art form and easily accessible for families from various parts of the city and its surrounding communities in Pennsylvania.

West View Park Drive is a local road that provides direct access to the academy. For those traveling by car, the location is generally straightforward to reach from major roadways, allowing for relatively smooth commutes for students and parents. While direct public transportation might require some transfers depending on the starting point within the broader Pittsburgh area, the suburban nature of the location suggests that private vehicle access is the most common and convenient mode of transport for attendees. Ample parking is typically available, which is a significant advantage, ensuring easy drop-offs and pick-ups without the stress of navigating dense urban parking. The studio's presence in a tranquil residential area also contributes to a focused and conducive learning environment, away from the hustle and bustle, allowing students to immerse themselves fully in their dance education. This thoughtful placement makes CDA a practical and desirable choice for families committed to high-quality ballet training in the region.

The Conservatory of Dance Arts/Classical Ballet Academy (CDA) offers a comprehensive range of ballet programs designed to provide exceptional classical ballet training for students of varying ages and skill levels. Their approach emphasizes meticulous instruction and individual progress.

  • Classical Ballet Training: The core service of CDA revolves around providing high-level classical ballet education. This includes a focus on fundamental techniques, correct body placement, and artistic expression, which are crucial for developing strong and versatile dancers.

  • Progressive Curriculum: The feedback indicates a clear progression in learning, where students are able to "progress more quickly than ever before." This suggests a well-structured curriculum that systematically builds skills from foundational levels to more advanced techniques.

  • Individualized Corrections and Feedback: A significant service highlight is the clear and effective communication of corrections. Instructors like Christopher Fellows are noted for "clearly explaining the corrections that needed to be made," allowing students to understand and implement changes quickly. This personalized attention is vital for rapid improvement.

  • Classes for Various Ages and Levels: While the reviews focus on children, the "Classical Ballet Academy" designation often implies offerings for a range of ages, potentially including pre-ballet for younger children, multiple levels for school-aged students, and possibly even adult ballet classes. The focus on "children's division" in some associated search results suggests dedicated programs for young learners, from 18 months to 8 years, with foundational classes like "Mommy & Me Ballet" and subsequent levels.

  • Performance Opportunities: For children's ballet students, annual performances of "The Nutcracker" in December and "Spring Gala performances" in April/May are provided. Participation is optional, with rehearsals held on weekends to avoid conflicts with class time. Costumes are provided and maintained by the academy with no additional fees.

  • Summer Programs: The academy also offers "Preschool/Beginner Summer camps" for ages 18 months to 10, as well as Fall schedules, indicating year-round opportunities for dance education.

  • Free Trial Classes: To encourage new students to experience their teaching style, CDA offers the opportunity to "Come try a class for free!" This low-commitment entry point is excellent for prospective students and their families.

The Conservatory of Dance Arts/Classical Ballet Academy (CDA) possesses several distinct features and highlights that truly set it apart as a premier ballet institution in the Pittsburgh region.

  • Superior Level of Education: This is arguably the most impactful highlight, as directly stated by a parent who noted that CDA "far exceeds the level of education they received prior" at numerous other area schools. This speaks volumes about the quality and depth of instruction.

  • Highly Knowledgeable and Deeply Caring Instructors: The instructors, particularly Christopher Fellows, are consistently praised for being "highly knowledgeable" and "deeply caring." This combination of expertise and genuine concern for student well-being creates an optimal learning environment where students feel supported and understood. Their ability to "clearly explain corrections" is a direct testament to their teaching prowess.

  • Rapid and Tangible Student Progress: A key feature is the visible and accelerated progress students achieve. As one daughter described, after starting at CDA, she was able to "progress more quickly than ever before" due to the clear explanations of corrections. This focus on individual improvement and effective teaching methods is a major draw for ambitious students.

  • Wonderful, Supportive Community: Despite being described as "small," the school is celebrated for being "comprised of kind, fun, hardworking students who support one another." This fosters a positive, non-competitive, and encouraging atmosphere that is vital for artistic and personal development. It's truly a "wonderful community."

  • Commitment to Foundational Classical Ballet: The academy emphasizes classical ballet as the "foundation of all forms of dance," instilling discipline and artistry from an early age. This rigorous foundation is beneficial not just for dance but also for academic and life skills.

  • "Hidden Gem" Status: The repeated description of CDA as a "hidden gem in the region that should be getting much more recognition" underscores its high quality despite perhaps not having the widespread visibility of larger institutions. This makes it an appealing discovery for those seeking top-tier, yet perhaps more personalized, instruction.

  • Optional Performance Opportunities with Provided Costumes: Students have the chance to perform in annual productions like "The Nutcracker" and Spring Galas. A notable highlight is that participation is optional, and all costumes are provided and maintained by the academy, eliminating additional costume fees for families.
