Colorado Movement Lab (CML) offers a comprehensive range of dance and movement classes designed to cater to a diverse clientele, from toddlers taking their first steps to experienced adult dancers. Their curriculum emphasizes technical excellence alongside artistic exploration and holistic well-being.
Adult Ballet Classes: A prominent offering, highly praised by students. CML's ballet classes focus on developing classical ballet foundations, spanning English, French, and Italian syllabi, while also adapting to the evolving demands on dancers. Classes prioritize strength, stamina, technique, and individual artistic expression, with a particular focus on body understanding and injury risk reduction.
Contemporary Movement Classes: These classes develop technique through alignment, strength, flexibility, coordination, and musicality. Drawing from various modern dance techniques (e.g., Nikolais/Louis, Graham, Limón, Bartenieff, Hawkins), dancers explore inner connections and somatic awareness to support expressive, three-dimensional movement. Playful interaction with gravity is used to understand energy dynamics.
Youth Dance Programs: CML provides age-appropriate classes for children and teens, including:
- Dance Together (ages 12-36 months with caregiver): Toddler dance exploration.
- Level A (ages 3-4) Ballet & Tap Lab: Early childhood dance education.
- Level B (ages 5-8) Ballet & Tap Lab: Continuing foundational dance.
- Level C (ages 6-9): Expanding dance concepts and skills.
- Fast Track (ages 9+ beginners): An expedited program for older beginners to quickly grasp basics and transition to intermediate levels.
- Levels D, E, F: For increasingly advanced youth dancers in various styles.
Diverse Dance Styles: Beyond ballet and contemporary, CML offers classes in genres such as Jazz, Hip Hop, Modern, Pointe, Repertoire, and Tap Dance Lab, providing a well-rounded dance education.
Wellness-Focused Classes: Incorporating a holistic approach, CML includes classes that emphasize body science and injury prevention. This ensures a safe and sustainable dance journey for students.
Composition and Choreography Intensives: For students interested in the creative process, CML offers intensives that explore choreography through improvisation, motif, phrasing, rhythm, and structure, culminating in performance opportunities.
Teacher Pedagogy Programs: Recognizing the importance of quality instruction, CML also provides intensive programs for aspiring or current dance educators, covering core teaching principles, practical tools, and personalized guidance.
Summer Programs and Workshops: Throughout the summer, CML offers various labs and intensives, providing concentrated learning experiences and performance opportunities.
Colorado Movement Lab distinguishes itself through several key features and highlights that contribute to its strong reputation and make it a highly suitable choice for dance enthusiasts in the Colorado region.
Exceptional and Inspiring Teachers: A consistent highlight from customer reviews is the caliber of CML's instructors. Teachers like Julia are praised for their "purposeful, thoughtful, and wonderfully musical" exercises, taking a "holistic approach to teaching dance" that is both "unusual and very nurturing." The entire faculty team is noted for being "amazing, inspiring dancer-teachers."
Welcoming and Non-Judgmental Community: CML fosters a truly supportive and inclusive environment. Customers, particularly adult beginners, express feeling "really welcome" and note the studio has "really good vibes, like very supportive and not judgmental at all." This creates a safe space for exploration and growth.
Beautiful and Well-Equipped Studios: The facility itself is a significant highlight, described as "beautiful" and "sun-filled." It features three studios (with room for expansion) and two wellness spaces, along with three showers. Crucially, the main studio is appointed with a full theatrical lighting grid for performances, and all labs utilize Rosco SubFloor, a sprung floor system designed to protect dancers' joints by minimizing impact and providing optimal resilience and stability.
Holistic Approach to Dance Education: CML's philosophy integrates body science, art, and movement potentiality. Instructors focus on anatomy, kinesiology, and injury risk management, ensuring that dance training is body-safe and healthy. This comprehensive approach nurtures both the physical and artistic development of dancers.
Embracing the Mirror-less Studio: A unique feature mentioned by a reviewer is the main studio's lack of a large mirror, which, while "strange at first," is ultimately described as "liberating." This encourages dancers to develop inner awareness and proprioception rather than relying solely on external reflection.
Commitment to Inclusion and Accessibility: CML emphasizes that dance is for "every body," welcoming all ages, skill levels, and abilities. They aim to help students "refine their craft, while also exploring new ways of artistic release," fostering an environment where innovation and tradition harmoniously coexist.
Diverse and Comprehensive Programming: From early childhood "Dance Together" classes to advanced adult intensives in various styles like ballet, contemporary, jazz, hip hop, and tap, CML offers a wide spectrum of classes. This caters to diverse interests and ensures continuous learning pathways.

Colorado Movement Lab Reviews
Colorado Movement Lab is a great community of dancers and teachers. I have enjoyed both adult ballet classes and contemporary movement classes there. I came to dance later in life and the folks at CML make me feel really welcome as an adult beginner. The studios are really beautiful and the place just has really good vibes, like very supportive and not judgmental at all. Plus there are some amazing, inspiring dancer-teachers there as well.
Jun 08, 2025 · Ethan CowanI have been taking adult ballet classes for more than 35 years. Julia at CML is my go-to Saturday morning class. At 9 am it’s a little early after a long work week but worth it. Julia’s exercises are purposeful, thoughtful, and wonderfully musical. She takes a very holistic approach to teaching dance. It’s unusual and very nurturing. The class level is listed as beginner/intermediate but leans intermediate. FYI: the main studio has no mirror (except for a small one in the back). It’s a little strange at first but also liberating.
Mar 09, 2025 · Poidogs FamilyMy high schooler aged dancer made the decision to move to CML. She speaks so highly of the instruction and how kind and welcoming everyone is. As a parent, I too appreciate the kindness, the ability to join this dance community. It is awesome to see dancers of all ages and everyone's ability welcomed. If you are new to dance or a seasoned dancer this is the place to be.
Feb 22, 2025 · Amy RyserColorado Movement Lab arose from the ashes of a prior iteration, emerging stronger. The instructors are world class, offering challenging yet achievable instruction for adults in the ballet arts. If you are looking for an adult class, consider CML as your first choice.
Jan 19, 2025 · Linda BussI would give it 10 stars if I could. Wonderful staff, caring community, and top notch dance training. I highly recommend for little kids who are taught with love in a structured class. For older kids, it is great for the positive and encouraging environment. And adults should come drop in for classes too. The studio space is as beautiful as the hearts of the staff. Come check it out, you will not regret it.
