Central Virginia Ballet, as a true ballet school, offers a focused yet comprehensive range of services and classes primarily centered on the rigorous discipline of classical ballet. Their curriculum is meticulously structured to provide a strong foundation and progressive development for dancers of all ages and levels of experience.
Classical Ballet Technique: The core offering, with classes designed to provide a solid foundation in proper ballet technique. This includes extensive barre work, center combinations, and across-the-floor progressions, emphasizing correct body placement, alignment, strength, and flexibility. Classes are divided by ability and experience.
Pre-Ballet / Introductory Dance Classes: For the youngest dancers (often starting around 3-5 years old), these classes introduce basic movements, rhythm, and coordination in a fun and exploratory manner, preparing them for more formal ballet training.
Pointe / Pre-Pointe: Specialized instruction for advanced ballet students ready to transition to pointe work. This requires previous ballet training, evaluation by an instructor, and a minimum age (typically 10 years old), often with a requirement for multiple ballet technique classes per week.
Variations / Adage / Pas de Deux: For advanced-level ballet dancers taking unlimited ballet classes, these sessions focus on learning excerpts from classical ballets, partner work (pas de deux), and adagio movements, requiring strong technique for participation and evaluation by the instructor.
Teen/Adult Ballet: Classes specifically designed for older students who wish to begin or return to ballet. Emphasis is on basic technique development, providing an opportunity for fitness and enjoyment without necessarily following a professional track. Intermediate adult ballet classes are also available for those with some prior experience.
Dance Camps and Intensives: The school offers specialized programs like ballet camps, providing intensive training and focused learning experiences during breaks, as highlighted by a review mentioning a daughter attending a challenging and enjoyable ballet camp.
Performance Opportunities: While specific productions are not detailed, a true ballet school typically provides opportunities for students to perform, showcasing their skills and progress in a formal setting (e.g., annual showcases or recitals).

Challenging Yet Enjoyable Training: As evidenced by a dancer who found a camp "a challenge for her that she thoroughly enjoyed," the school provides rigorous training that pushes students to improve, yet does so in a way that remains engaging and fulfilling. This balance is vital for long-term artistic development.
Focus on Self-Correction and Growth: The emphasis on providing "good critiques" and compliments when students "self-corrected or pulled through something hard" highlights a pedagogical approach that empowers dancers to become independent learners and resilient performers.

Central Virginia Ballet Reviews
My daughter recently attended a ballet camp here. She’s been dancing for 7 years at another studio, and they suggested she attend. She had a great time. She loved Mrs. Mori. She said she got good critiques and was given compliments when she self corrected or pulled through something hard, which is a huge deal for young dancers. The camp was a challenge for her that she thoroughly enjoyed.

Mari Mori is the definition of a professional, with her life spent dancing, choreographing , and teaching ballet. Her and her employees are kind, patient, knowledgeable, and fair. All students receive equal tutelage and there is no favoritism. My daughter has been dancing there since she was a toddler and we would never dream of going anywhere else!
Sep 11, 2021 · Katherine SantosCentral Virginia Ballet and owner, Mari Mori, are truly a treasure in Lynchburg. My daughter has taken ballet, tap and jazz here for the past 4 years and it has been a wonderful experience. I take the Adult Ballet class on Monday mornings and find it to be the best way to start my week. The results have been increased flexibility, muscle strength and toning, and it is such a fun class!
Jan 29, 2018 · Melissa WilliamsMs. Mari Mori is a jewel and we are so fortunate to have her in Lynchburg. Our daughter has taken ballet at Central Virginia Ballet for 3 years. Mari is compassionate, dedicated, professional, and intelligent. She gives the students her all! She is concerned about their progress and she is respected by students and parents alike. We hope CVB continues to grow with students and families that are eager to learn from the BEST!
Feb 18, 2018 · Josh BinderOur 3 year old daughter has been going to this studio for 4 months now. She is always upset at the end of every class. I asked her why she always gets sad and starts crying when class ends and she said, "I wanted to keep dancing." She just danced in the spring recital and the look of pure joy on her face as the whole company received a standing ovation for their work cannot be expressed in words.Mari helped me learn how to do my daughter's hair, not an easy thing for someone who has never done more than brush their hair in their life. Our daughter's instructor Brianna does a fabulous job with the little ones and even though it seems like she is herding a bunch of dancing cats she always has a positive attitude towards them.Cannot recommend this studio enough.Update: Almost 5 years later and still going strong. My now 8 year old daughter is still dancing here along with my 6 and 3 year old daughters! They all love it tremendously. The recitals continue to be phenomenal!
