My daughter has loved her ballet classes here. It's been a much better experience than the former Ms. Tilly's and the Tutu School in North Beach. The students are learning actual dance moves and the semi-annual performances are a joy to watch. Both Ms. Simone and Ms. Angela are lovely people. They are patient and kind with the kids, and have excellent e-mail communication with the parents. Thank you CANVAS for the great experience thus far! - Jen Ko

CANVAS Dance Arts has rapidly established itself as a cherished institution in the San Francisco dance community, distinguished by several key features and highlights that resonate strongly with families and students.

  • Founders' Expertise and Philosophy: The studio was co-founded by Ms. Simone van der Meer and Ms. Angela Yuen Uyeda, both experienced dance instructors and performers in the Bay Area. Their complementary styles and shared vision — "Artistry in Community, Community in Artistry" — form the bedrock of the academy. They are praised for their dynamic instruction, family-friendly choreography, and dedication to community engagement.
  • Inclusive and Positive Environment: A core highlight is the school's mission to provide an "inclusive, positive environment" where students feel comfortable and encouraged. Reviews consistently emphasize the patience, kindness, and supportiveness of Ms. Simone and Ms. Angela, making it a "much better experience" than other schools and creating a "friendly environment" where students love their classes.
  • Focus on Holistic Development: Beyond teaching dance steps, CANVAS Dance Arts is lauded for helping students develop confidence, strength, and a love for movement. The instructors are noted for making "kids comfortable with their body," which is seen as "a key to success in life," indicating a focus on overall well-being.
  • Effective Instruction Across Levels: Whether it's "Ballet/Hip Hop Basics" for preschoolers or "Ballet II/III" and "Hip Hop II/III" for older children, the instructors are effective at teaching actual dance moves. Students are reported to be "learning actual dance moves" and advancing their skills, even in mixed-level adult classes where instructors are "amazing, great at helping people at different levels, and happy to offer personalized attention."
  • Excellent Parent Communication: Parents appreciate the "excellent e-mail communication," which fosters transparency and keeps families informed, contributing to a smooth and positive experience.
  • Joyful Performance Opportunities: The "semi-annual performances are a joy to watch," providing students with valuable stage experience in a celebratory, low-pressure setting. This ensures that the thrill of performance enhances, rather than diminishes, the learning experience.
  • Adaptability and Innovation: Born during a global health crisis in 2021, the founders quickly adapted to virtual and outdoor lessons, creating dance video content to make dance accessible outside the studio. This demonstrated resilience and a commitment to their students' continued learning.
  • Diverse Class Offerings for All Ages: From tiny tots (ages 2.5) to teens and adults (with Buti Yoga and "DANCEfit" classes), CANVAS provides a wide array of styles including ballet, hip hop, and contemporary, ensuring there's something for everyone in the family.
