The Ballet School of Chapel Hill offers a comprehensive array of dance programs catering to diverse age groups and skill levels, demonstrating its commitment to providing high-quality dance education for the entire community.
Children's Programs (Stages One to Four):
Stage One (Ages 3-7): Designed for the youngest dancers (3 to 7 years old), these classes are offered once a week and are placed by age. They focus on developing gross motor skills, basic strengthening and stretching, musicality, learning ballet class structure, storytelling through movement, and most importantly, fun! No previous experience is needed.
Stage Two (Beginning Ballet, Ages 8+): This stage lays the foundation for ballet technique. Level A requires no previous experience for dancers at least 8 years old. Focus is on correct posture, alignment, balance, coordination, and expanding ballet vocabulary. Classes typically meet twice a week and offer an optional "Extended Study Package" exposing students to jazz, contemporary, theatre dance, and/or character dance.
Stage Three (Intermediate Ballet, Ages 10+): For dancers who have completed Stage Two, these 90-minute classes meet twice a week. They build on basics with an emphasis on strength, flexibility, a wider variety of steps, and increased difficulty in combinations. The Extended Study Package options also increase at this stage.
Stage Four (Advanced Ballet): Designed for students dancing at least three times per week, these levels require a strong understanding and execution of basic technical principles, mastery of previously learned steps, and confident performance with aplomb. This stage is for highly accomplished and competent dancers.
Adult Dance Classes: The Ballet School of Chapel Hill is highly praised for its adult programs, catering to various experience levels.
Beginner Adult Ballet: Designed for those with no prior experience, these classes teach the basics of classical ballet technique, including barre work and center exercises. As noted in a customer review, trial classes are available.
Intermediate Adult Ballet: For dancers with previous knowledge, even if it was years ago. These classes offer a focused open format, consisting of a long strengthening barre, center work, and across-the-floor combinations.
Adult Body Conditioning: A non-ballet specific class focusing on strengthening the core, alignment, and control while lengthening and stretching.
Other Adult Classes: The school also offers adult classes in Rhythm Tap and Modern, catering to diverse interests and providing options for varied movement disciplines.
Summer Programs: The school offers Arts + Dance Camps for ages 3-7 during the summer, providing weekly themed opportunities to discover dance, art, music, and storytelling in a creative studio and outdoor playground space. These camps often include a "Lunch Bunch" option and may feature weekly showings for families.
Performance Opportunities: While not explicitly detailed in the provided information for children's camps, the school's historical sponsorship of various performing companies (like the former Chapel Hill Ballet and 15-501 Ballet companies, Carolina Dancers, Taptations, and the North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble) indicates a strong tradition of providing performance avenues for its students.
