Yvonne's Dance Academy Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For families in Illinois seeking a dance education that prioritizes nurturing development, creative expression, and individual growth, Yvonne's Dance Academy (YDA) in Chicago's Irving Park neighborhood offers a unique and supportive environment. Established in 2008 by founder and artistic director Yvonne Grabe-Liddell, YDA has grown into a vibrant community where children are "acknowledged as the individuals they are and not just another number." The academy's core mission is to "educate and inspire children in a loving, safe, and nurturing manner," fostering developmentally appropriate skills while simultaneously encouraging creative expression. Unlike some larger, more competitive studios, Yvonne's Dance Academy emphasizes a structured yet non-competitive environment, believing that dance is a powerful tool for building self-esteem, good character, and a lifelong appreciation for the art form itself. From the earliest "Bitty/Kinder" classes designed to spark a passion for movement, to more advanced technique classes and an "Elite Team," YDA strives to meet each dancer where they are, helping them explore their potential. For parents looking for a dance home that offers "excellent instruction" and responsive teachers in an intimate, community-focused setting, Yvonne's Dance Academy presents a compelling choice right here in the heart of Illinois.

Yvonne's Dance Academy Reviews
Constructive Feedback for Kids Dance Class (Ages 4–6)I enrolled my child in this dance class hoping for a structured, engaging program suited for the 4–6 age group. Unfortunately, the overall experience fell short of expectations, particularly when it comes to the educational value and transparency of the program.Areas of Concern:Class Content & Structure: The level of choreography and instruction felt more appropriate for 2–3-year-olds rather than 4–6. The sessions lacked warm-ups and stretching exercises, which are essential not only for physical safety but also for developing good dance habits.Recital Costs & Quality: From the start of the year, families are encouraged to purchase an $80 costume for a recital. Later, an additional recital fee ranging from $120–150 is charged, with the promise of a professional photo shoot. Unfortunately, the photos we received were of poor quality—blurry, taken against a wrinkled white cloth backdrop, and seemingly done without professional lighting or equipment. To add to this, parents were then asked to pay another $50 per person just to attend the recital, which feels excessive.Value vs. Cost: While extracurricular activities often come with associated costs, the number and nature of these fees felt more like a commercial model than an arts-based education program. The focus appeared to be on revenue rather than on providing a high-quality dance experience. The choreography lacked cohesion, and there was little evidence of development toward actual performance readiness or artistic expression.Overall Impression:This studio may function better as a casual aftercare activity rather than a true dance school or "academy," as it advertises itself. For parents who are seeking a serious introduction to dance—one that values technique, musicality, and thoughtful choreography—this may not be the right fit. I would recommend asking to view footage or examples from past recitals before committing, to ensure the program aligns with your expectations for quality and growth.I hope this feedback helps the studio reflect on ways to improve their curriculum, communication, and value for families in the future.

Sep 18, 2021 · Jan McDermitMy daughter has been taking classes with Yvonne's Dance Academy since kindergarten. We have loved being part of YDA for these past 8 years and plan to continue indefinitely. My daughter has taken tap, contemporary, ballet, hip hip and participated in the Elite team. We traveled with YDA to Disney World Florida to dance on stage and in the big park which was an amazing experience. There have been weekend workshops and competitions. My daughter is has a wonderful connection with Yvonne, the owner, as well as Paulina and the other amazing instructors. This is a dance school that teaches dance but also prepares dancers for other areas of life through the example of their teachers. Every performance is breathtaking. We have so many amazing videos, photos and memories. I am very happy knowing my daughter is in such good hands and watching her grow and dance so beautifully. Thank you YDA!!!
Nov 13, 2021 · Angela DukeExcellent dance instruction for kids! Ballet focused school with good variety of classes for kids pre-school through high school, including contemporary dance, tap and hip-hop. Very professional yet nurturing for kids, and an amazing spring recital each year. We love it.
Aug 30, 2021 · Betsi SchumacherOur child loves YDA and we've participated for over 10 years. From young children to teenagers, YDA provides a great group of instructors who are caring, challenge children to do their best and inspire confidence. Ms. Yvonne (owner and teacher) and the other instructors have had strong positive impact on our child over the last decade. Note our child does not attend St. Bens -- but we find the St. Bens students and parents welcoming and inclusive.
