Shishya School Of Performing Arts Reviews
I started attending Shishya School in 2021 at the age of 29 with my mother-in-law. As a non-Indian/non-Hindu-born person, I knew taking up this art form centered around Indian and Hindu history and stories was going to have many challenges, however, Guru Sukanya hasn't missed a beat. When learning new dance items, she takes the time to translate the lyrics (from multiple languages, mind you) and provide cultural and historical context - I've basically been given a crash course in Indian history and vedic texts!Guru Sukanya altered the curriculum which is usually structured for children starting at young ages to fit my understanding level and lifestyle as a working adult. My mother-in-law and I have been taught the foundation for bharatanatyam in a way that works for us.As I've learned in my bharatanatyam studies, Shishya roughly translates to "student" in Sanskrit and that's 100% the focus here. The teachers at Shishya approach all of the students with respect and kindness. I'm constantly in awe when I see Guru Sukanya, assistant teachers, and student teachers take the time to break steps down or work one-on-one with a struggling student until they nail it.Learning bharatanatyam at Shishya has also provided me with a caring, passionate community! The other shishyas and even their parents have shown me so much love and kindness and quickly welcomed me into the fold! Two days every week I attend different level courses and look forward to them! Thank you for the opportunities to express and challenge myself physically and mentally, connect to people with similar interests, and build confidence along the way. 🤍
May 24, 2023 · Vicki Quintero AgrawalThis review is from a father based on his daughter’s experience at this school. My daughter faced discrimination from one of the class mom’s in this school! The class mom in question not only directly discriminated against my daughter, she had the guts to tell my wife in private message that she is doing it! As an adult, this class mom did not care to think what my daughter will go through, and how she will feel!It is sad and unfortunate that my daughter’s first experience in life with discrimination happened at this school! It is the owners responsibility to ensure that groupism and caste discrimination is not allowed in this school! Class mom’s that practice such behavior should not be allowed and supported!!As a father, I will try to find another school for my daughter as I do not want my daughter to go through this experience again! I want her to use this as a learning experience to learn to stand up for herself and not be a victim of discrimination!I’m still giving 3 stars as my daughters have been going here for 5 years but faced this situation for the first time, and the owner may not know about the private message the class mom in question sent! The owner however was made aware of the discrimination that happened and from her end was fair in recognizing the students!
May 22, 2023 · Amit RawatMy daughters have been attending the Shishya school for the past 11 years continuously - from beginners 1 level through to their Arangetrams and this is truly a special place. As the name suggests (Shishya means "student" in Sanskirt), the teacher always puts the student at the center and first. Beyond dance, the teacher models kindness and camaraderie and this is part of the fabric of the institution. The school has performed in many venues including Carnegie Hall and in India at the Marghazhi festivals and annual day productions that have included unique aspects like the dance drama (jungle book one year) and a celebration of the five elements of nature. True to the school's motto of "art for humanity" the school also raises funds for a cause every year. Overall, Shishya school is a rare gem in the cut-throat world of dance education and offers a safe haven for art, learning and community and combines traditional dance with modern day sensibilities. Would strongly recommend to anyone considering an education in this art form as it has cultivated a lifelong passion and dedication to dance for my children.
