The Piedmont Swing Dance Society offers a simple yet incredibly effective set of services centered around fostering a love for swing dance and creating memorable social experiences. Their focus is on accessibility and enjoyment for all.
- Regular Social Dances: The core offering of the society is its series of social swing dances, often held on the fourth Saturday of the month, though specific dates and locations vary and should be checked on their official website or social media. These events are designed for open participation and a lively atmosphere.
- Free Beginner Lessons: A fantastic feature for newcomers, each dance event typically begins with a free introductory Jitterbug or East Coast Swing lesson. This pre-dance class, usually starting an hour before the main music, means absolutely no prior experience is required, making swing dancing approachable for everyone.
- Live Music Performances: A significant highlight of their events is the inclusion of live bands. The society rotates through different band styles, ensuring a diverse musical experience that might include jump blues, big band, and traditional jazz swing bands. This live music element greatly enhances the authentic swing dance experience.
- Affordable Admission: The events are priced to be highly accessible, with discounted rates for members and students, and a very reasonable cost for non-members, often including the free lesson.
- No Partner Required: The society actively promotes an inclusive environment where individuals do not need to bring a partner to participate. The social nature of swing dancing and the friendly atmosphere encourage dancers to rotate partners throughout the evening.
- Membership Opportunities: For those who wish to support the society and enjoy additional benefits, annual memberships are available at an affordable rate. These memberships often include discounted admission to dances, access to member-only events or raffles, and support for the local swing dance community.
- Community Newsletter ("The Skinny"): To keep members and enthusiasts informed, the society publishes a newsletter called "The Skinny," which, along with their Facebook page, serves as a primary source for updates on upcoming dances, venues, and other swing dance news in the area.
The Piedmont Swing Dance Society distinguishes itself with several key features and highlights that make it a truly special and beloved part of the North Carolina social dance scene.

Reviewers frequently mention "friendly people" and "nice people," emphasizing that the society fosters a non-intimidating and supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable joining in, regardless of their skill level or whether they arrive alone.
- Live Band Experience: The commitment to featuring live bands, and rotating different styles like jump blues, big band, and traditional jazz swing, is a significant draw. This provides an authentic and vibrant atmosphere that elevates the entire dance experience beyond what recorded music can offer.

Piedmont Swing Dance Society Reviews
Had a wonderful time at the dance. The band was great and the other dancers were very friendly. And the best part is the value. A free lesson, fun band and friendly people. No experience or partner required. Hard to find a better deal or a more fun way to spend a Saturday night!
May 31, 2018 · Anita IsleyIf you haven't at least tried swing dancing with this group, you owe it to yourself to give it a try. Nice people! Learning to swing dance and then dancing to a live band makes for a great (and inexpensive) evening out. And when you need a break, you can sit and watch the dancers as you listen to the band. They also rotate the band styles from one dance to the next, so you'll hear jump blues, big band, and traditional jazz swing bands!
