Philadelphia Burlesque Academy Reviews
The Philadelphia Burlesque Academy (PBA) is my favorite dance studio in Philly! I’ve been taking classes at PBA for a little over 2 years. I’ve taken drop-in classes and done the group choreo performance series. One of my favorite things about Ginger Leigh is the amount of empathy she has for newcomers! I’ve taken dances in the class in the past (not at PBA) with instructors who didn’t empathize with how vulnerable it was to be new at something because their years of experience made them forget what it was like. While Ginger Leigh has several years of experience as a choreographer, dancer, host, and producer, she is skilled at making newbies feel comfortable. Her background as a personal trainer makes her skilled at modifying movements for folks with injuries and even recommending strength training exercises to make it easier to execute challenging moves. I was terrified of floor work when I first started taking classes and I’ve come to embrace it!I’ve also taken Twerk class with Queen Nzinga. Queen was very attuned to the needs of students in the class. She took information about our experience-level and applied it to her teaching. For example, one student had a yoga background and Queen broke down the movements in terms of yoga poses. Queen was also very upfront that twerking may not come quickly if you’re not used to it and that the way to improve is to practice and continue coming to class.I also like that you can choose your comfort level at PBA. If you only want to take classes for yourself, there is space for that. Or if you eventually want to perform in front of people, there is space for that too. I can’t recommend PBA enough.
Aug 18, 2024 · Lauren YatesI had such a wonderful experience at the Philadelphia Burlesque Academy! Ginger's guidance and support throughout the entire experience was uplifting. Not only did she ensure that we were comfortable with every aspect of the performance, but she also fostered an environment where we could truly embrace our confidence and individuality. The attention to detail and personal touch made the experience unforgettable. I highly recommend the Philadelphia Burlesque Academy for anyone looking to explore the world of burlesque in a welcoming and empowering atmosphere!
Apr 23, 2024 · VerónicaOne of the most positive dance environments in the city. I've taken classes at quite a few dance establishments in Philly and PBA has the best culture by far - super friendly, supportive, and welcoming. Classes are great across the board and I always leave feeling energized, sexy, and in a great mood. There's a good variety of courses, from the less-strenuous to the very technical. Ginger and Cherry are the staple instructors and they teach a fun variety of styles during All Levels. For the intermediate classes, they have a rotating cast of guest instructors, which is SO great for trying out different flavors of burlesque. I've also taken the belly dance fusion class with Jewelissa and the jazz fusion class with Maxxxie Ford - both delightful. Bear Trap's monthly "Ooey Gooey" movement meditation class is astounding - hard to describe but you will leave feeling healed and replenished.A lovely, welcoming, and feel-good environment, with classes for both the casual dancer looking for a fun workout to the experienced dancer looking for highly technical instruction and complicated choreography. The fun and kinship between the students is the icing on the cake!
Aug 18, 2024 · EmiPhiladelphia Burlesque Academy is the place to go! I moved to Philly and needed to make new friends so I decided to try a new studio and see what burlesque was all about. I got what I wanted and so much more! Head Mistress Ginger and Mistress Cherry have created a special place where learning is fun and invigorating and the community can thrive!Classes at PBA feel like a play space where you can try new things and learn to connect with your body. The vibes are silly, warm and welcoming! The many instructors they bring in to teach and guest teach are incredible and have a variety of skills to share! The schedule is consistent and in my experience, the classes are affordable and well priced. The classes vary in level and the instructors do a great job in making the content accessible. The studio is clean and well-maintained, with bathrooms, water, and granny candy available! Street parking around the studio can sometimes be hard to find but it's always free and usually available. If you want to try something new or learn a new way of doing something you already know and love I highly recommend dropping in for a class at PBA.
Apr 24, 2024 · Rae ZThis dance academy is welcoming, encouraging, challenging and super supportive! I've been dancing for many years and several of my favorite classes have taken place at PBA. Every teacher has a slightly different style and perspective and they're all fantastic at creating a safe and motivating space to move in. 5 very happy stars for Ginger, Cherry and the whole PBA family ❤️
