The Philadelphia Burlesque Academy (PBA) is my favorite dance studio in Philly! I’ve been taking classes at PBA for a little over 2 years. I’ve taken drop-in classes and done the group choreo performance series. One of my favorite things about Ginger Leigh is the amount of empathy she has for newcomers! I’ve taken dances in the class in the past (not at PBA) with instructors who didn’t empathize with how vulnerable it was to be new at something because their years of experience made them forget what it was like. While Ginger Leigh has several years of experience as a choreographer, dancer, host, and producer, she is skilled at making newbies feel comfortable. Her background as a personal trainer makes her skilled at modifying movements for folks with injuries and even recommending strength training exercises to make it easier to execute challenging moves. I was terrified of floor work when I first started taking classes and I’ve come to embrace it!I’ve also taken Twerk class with Queen Nzinga. Queen was very attuned to the needs of students in the class. She took information about our experience-level and applied it to her teaching. For example, one student had a yoga background and Queen broke down the movements in terms of yoga poses. Queen was also very upfront that twerking may not come quickly if you’re not used to it and that the way to improve is to practice and continue coming to class.I also like that you can choose your comfort level at PBA. If you only want to take classes for yourself, there is space for that. Or if you eventually want to perform in front of people, there is space for that too. I can’t recommend PBA enough. - Lauren Yates
