I have to say that when they do receive instruction it is very good instruction. Teacher is stricter than other instructors and it shows in the talent. But that also is where the problem is. Their main focus is performances. If your child is newer they are literally excluded and told to go to the back of the class. They do not receive instruction there. They are left there to keep themselves busy. The teacher told me that if they dance or don't dance that is up to them. She can't be staying on top of it. Well mine does dance but feels completely left out and excluded. From now until late August when they have a performance the focus will be on the students that she deems are qualified to perform and make their dance company look good. So for over 4 months my child will stand in the back because she is newer and not receive instruction. We are Mexican, our focus should be to teach and instruct all students that sign up. So our culture is passed down, new ones and more experienced alike. This is a beginner class. Teacher has a very brash way of communicating. She cuts people off won't listen to anything anyone has to say. It's very much a take it or leave it kind of environment. There is almost like a class mom that is in place because the teacher doesn't want to deal with parents. It is not like this in other classes, by far. At least not the one that we attended previously. And left only because the teacher was injured and could not teach for a few months.I am taking my child where she will be given proper instruction and will be taught as a student and not looked at as a trophy to be won or to bring in more business. Because after performances there is an influx of new students. It is important to me that she know my culture and it should be to them too. Could you imagine school teachers doing this because they deem your child doesn't know enough. Isn't that their job to teach. She doesn't even wear folklorico shoes when she instructs. Other teachers do this. And they dance along with the class through the whole class. My little one came home and was role playing with her babies and I overheard her say. That they were having a showcase where everyone was included. This was heartbreaking to hear 馃様 - Araceli Labrado

Orgullo Mestizo Folk Ballet Introduce

Orgullo Mestizo Folk Ballet is a dance company located in Fontana, California, dedicated to the vibrant and rich tradition of Mexican folk dance, also known as Ballet Folklorico. This organization aims to preserve and share Mexican culture through the art of dance, offering a space where individuals can learn the intricate steps, colorful traditions, and expressive storytelling inherent in these unique dance forms. It serves as a cultural hub for the community, providing an opportunity for both seasoned dancers and newcomers to connect with their heritage and celebrate the beauty of Mexican folkloric traditions.

The core mission of a Ballet Folklorico group like Orgullo Mestizo is typically to educate and inspire, ensuring that the legacy of Mexican folk dance is passed down through generations. This involves rigorous training in various regional dance styles, each with its own distinct music, costumes, and choreography, reflecting the diverse cultural tapestry of Mexico. The goal is often to provide a platform for cultural expression, foster a sense of pride, and build a strong community around shared artistic and cultural values.

Orgullo Mestizo Folk Ballet is located at 15556 Summit Ave, Fontana, CA 92336, USA. This address places the organization within the city of Fontana, a prominent community in the Inland Empire region of Southern California. Its location in Fontana makes it accessible to residents within the city itself, as well as those in nearby communities such as Rancho Cucamonga, Rialto, Ontario, and San Bernardino.

Fontana is a sprawling city, and accessibility to specific locations often relies on personal vehicle transport. The Summit Avenue location is likely situated in an area that allows for relatively straightforward driving access, with local roads connecting to larger thoroughfares. For those traveling by car, it is important to check for available parking options around the facility to ensure a smooth arrival and departure for classes and events. While public transportation might have limitations in reaching this specific address compared to denser urban centers, the vast majority of locals in this part of California rely on private vehicles for daily commutes and activities, making the location generally accessible for its intended audience.

Orgullo Mestizo Folk Ballet is dedicated to teaching Mexican folkloric dance. While specific details about all program offerings are not publicly detailed, based on the nature of a folk ballet company and the provided reviews, the services offered typically include:

  • Mexican Folkloric Dance Instruction: Core classes focusing on various regional styles of Mexican folk dance, teaching the specific steps, rhythms, and cultural significance of each.

  • Beginner Classes: Programs designed for students with little to no prior dance experience, aiming to introduce them to the fundamentals of Ballet Folklorico and Mexican culture.

  • Performance-Oriented Training: A significant focus on preparing students for performances, including local showcases, community events, and possibly larger dance company productions. This involves choreography, staging, and group synchronization.

  • Cultural Transmission: An inherent service of any Ballet Folklorico group is the passing down of Mexican cultural heritage through dance, music, and traditional attire, aiming to instill cultural pride in students.

Orgullo Mestizo Folk Ballet exhibits several features and highlights, as well as areas where its approach may present challenges, based on the provided customer reviews:

  • High Quality of Instruction for Qualified Students: Reviews indicate that when instruction is received, it is "very good instruction," and the teacher's stricter approach "shows in the talent" of certain dancers. This suggests that the highest-level dancers may achieve impressive skill sets.

  • Performance-Centric Focus: A primary emphasis of the organization is on public performances. This can be a highlight for advanced students who enjoy performing and for audiences who appreciate cultural showcases.

  • Cultural Preservation Through Dance: The very nature of a Folk Ballet company like Orgullo Mestizo highlights a commitment to preserving and passing down Mexican cultural traditions through dance, which is a valuable aspect for the community.

However, based on significant feedback from a local user, there are important considerations regarding the operational aspects and student experience:

  • Exclusion of Newer/Less Experienced Students: A critical concern raised is that newer students are "literally excluded and told to go to the back of the class" where they "do not receive instruction" and are "left there to keep themselves busy." This is particularly noted during periods leading up to performances, where focus shifts almost entirely to students "deemed qualified to perform."

  • Lack of Individualized Attention for Beginners: The sentiment is that for newer students, the teacher indicates it's "up to them" whether they dance or not, suggesting a lack of proactive engagement in teaching all registered students, especially in beginner classes.

  • Communication Style and Parent Engagement: The teacher is described as having a "very brash way of communicating," cutting people off and not listening to parents. The presence of a "class mom" managing parent interactions due to the teacher's reluctance to deal directly with parents is also noted as unusual compared to other dance classes.

  • Perceived Focus on Performance/Business Over Instruction: There is a strong perception that the organization prioritizes looking good in performances and attracting new students after showcases, rather than fulfilling the core responsibility of teaching all students who sign up, regardless of their current skill level.

  • Lack of Instructor Participation in Class: A specific detail mentioned is that the instructor "doesn't even wear folklorico shoes when she instructs" and does not "dance along with the class through the whole class," which contrasts with experiences at other studios.

  • Emotional Impact on Students: The most heartbreaking highlight is the emotional distress experienced by newer students who feel "completely left out and excluded," with one child role-playing a scenario where "everyone was included," indicating a deep desire for inclusion and proper instruction.

These points of feedback suggest that while the company may produce talented performers from its advanced students, the experience for beginner and newer students, especially children, may not align with the expectations of a nurturing and inclusive learning environment focused on cultural transmission for all.

Orgullo Mestizo Folk Ballet, situated in Fontana, California, presents itself as a local point of interest for residents seeking to engage with Mexican culture through dance. For locals, particularly those of Mexican heritage, such an organization offers a valuable opportunity to connect with and preserve traditional art forms within their own community. The focus on performances means that the company provides cultural showcases for the public, enriching the local arts scene.

However, based on significant user feedback, it is crucial for locals considering this organization to be aware of the experiences shared by current and former participants. While the instruction for advanced dancers is described as "very good," the reviews highlight concerns about the treatment of newer or less experienced students, particularly children. The perception that beginner students are excluded from instruction, especially during performance preparation periods, and that communication with parents can be challenging, are important factors for potential participants to weigh.

For locals whose primary goal is to ensure their child receives consistent, inclusive instruction and feels genuinely supported in learning Mexican folk dance, regardless of their current skill level, it would be advisable to thoroughly investigate the student experience for beginners. As one reviewer stated, the emphasis for their family was for their child to "be given proper instruction and will be taught as a student and not looked at as a trophy." While the organization contributes to cultural performance in the community, families prioritizing a nurturing, inclusive learning environment for all students may wish to explore if this aligns with their expectations for a local cultural institution.
