Hickory Ballet & Performing Arts (HBPA) offers a comprehensive range of programs designed to cater to a wide spectrum of ages, skill levels, and artistic interests, from foundational ballet to dynamic musical theater.
Classical Ballet Program: This is a cornerstone of HBPA's offerings, providing rigorous training in classical ballet technique. Students learn discipline, grace, and precision, essential for all dance forms. The program culminates in significant performance opportunities, including an annual production of The Nutcracker in the fall and an additional story ballet each spring.
Performing Arts Curriculum: Expanding beyond classical ballet, HBPA offers a wider genre of dance and theatre classes, reflecting its evolution into a full-fledged performing arts center. This includes:
- Musical Theater: Students delve into a class that combines singing, dance, and drama, working on various musicals and technique training across all three genres. This program offers showcase opportunities in a Junior musical in the fall and a full-length musical in the spring.
- Jazz: Focuses on dynamic movements, turns, leaps, and stage presence.
- Lyrical/Contemporary: Blends ballet and jazz to express emotion through fluid movement, often interpreting song lyrics.
- Hip-Hop: High-energy and rhythmic, teaching dynamic movements rooted in urban culture.
- Tap: Develops rhythm and musicality through percussive footwork.
- Creative Movement: Tailored for younger children, focusing on imagination, basic motor skills, and an introduction to movement concepts.
- Pointe: Offered to invited dancers, focusing on proper alignment, correct placement, weight distribution, and knowledge of pointe shoes.
Classes for All Ages and Levels: HBPA welcomes students from very young ages through adulthood, accommodating various experience levels. Programs like "Twinkle Class" (ballet & tap for ages 2.5-4) and "Expression Program Classes" (for ages 5-7, including "Diamond Dancers" and "Funky Flow") ensure that even the youngest aspiring dancers have a place. Older students have options like "Shooting Stars" (ballet, tap & jazz for ages 7-9) and "Flair" (ballet, contemporary & jazz for ages 8-12).
Scholarship Opportunities: As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, HBPA is committed to making arts education affordable. They offer partial scholarships to a limited number of students through a blind application/selection process, ensuring access for dancers in need.

Hickory Ballet & Performing Arts Reviews
Our daughter has danced with Hickory Ballet and Performing Arts for 4 years now. We love that not only is she having fun while learning proper techniques and being challenged daily but that we have seen her confidence soar as she is discovering her love of Performing. Her teachers care not only about her dance skills but also for my child and her best interest. And, as a parent that has sat through many hours of recitals, the 2 ballet and 2 musical theater performances every year are excellent performances and very entertaining. The first lesson is free to allow you and your child to determine if this is the right studio for you (but I must warn you, with the first musical theater class, our daughter was hooked and hasn't stopped singing and dancing since!) Even better, the studio is also a non-profit that cares about sharing the arts and love of dance with the community so be on the lookout for free performances in downtown Hickory and at the libraries! Amazing people and top notch studio!
