Formerly known as The Ruth Mitchell Dance Studio, GMDT is a distinguished 501(c)(3) non-profit, student-based dance company. Housed within the studios of Georgia Dance Conservatory, GMDT is dedicated to educating, cultivating, and inspiring young dancers to become the next generation of artists and leaders. It's a place where rigorous dance training meets diverse performance opportunities, all within an environment that fosters growth, discipline, and a profound love for the art of dance.
GMDT's reputation for excellence is strongly echoed in the heartfelt testimonials from its long-standing members. One parent beautifully describes GMDT as a "second home" for their children for seventeen years, highlighting it as "the best experience for my family." They commend the "love that Ashleigh Whitworth and the staff at GMDT pour into our children," noting the tremendous growth in their children's confidence, joy, and passion for dance, as well as the lasting friendships formed. Another review emphasizes that this "little niche non-profit does great work in our community, teaching students to not only dance, but also to be good people." This sentiment encapsulates GMDT's holistic approach, focusing on character development alongside artistic mastery. With a rich history dating back to its founding by Atlanta dance pioneer Ruth Mitchell in 1956, GMDT proudly stands as one of Georgia's oldest non-profit arts organizations, consistently delivering high-quality dance productions to the community, including the cherished annual performance of The Nutcracker.

Georgia Metropolitan Dance Theatre offers a structured and comprehensive program designed for dedicated student dancers, ranging in age generally from seven years old to graduating high school seniors. While GMDT itself is the performing company, the training is conducted through the Georgia Dance Conservatory (GDC), its official school. The services and programs are tailored to provide rigorous training and ample performance experience. Here's a look at what GMDT, in conjunction with GDC, provides:
- Company Division Training: This is the core program for GMDT dancers, housed within Georgia Dance Conservatory. It provides performance-focused training.
- Diverse Dance Styles: Weekly training for company dancers includes multiple classes such as:
- Ballet: Foundational classical ballet technique.
- Jazz: Dynamic and expressive dance.
- Contemporary: Exploring fluid movement and emotional expression.
- Conditioning: Essential physical training to enhance strength, flexibility, and injury prevention.
- Pointe Work: Specialized training for advanced ballet students.
- Rigorous Training Schedule: Depending on the level (e.g., Pre-Theatre, Apprentice Theatre, Theatre I/II), dancers attend GDC classes multiple days a week, with hours ranging from 2 hours for younger levels up to 7.25 hours for advanced levels, often including dedicated GMDT rehearsals on Sundays (and Saturdays for higher levels).
- Major Annual Performances: GMDT stages three major productions each year, bringing high-quality dance to the community. These include:
- The Nutcracker: A beloved annual holiday tradition, featuring professional dancers alongside GMDT company members.
- Spring Show: Often a full-length ballet or a mixed repertoire performance, showcasing various styles.
- Dracula: An intriguing ballet performance, sometimes featured in the fall season.
- Additional Performance Opportunities: Beyond the major productions, GMDT dancers may have other performance engagements throughout the season.
- Dancing With The Stars of Marietta: A popular annual fundraising event where local "community celebrities" are paired with professional choreographers and GMDT dancers to compete, supporting the arts and showcasing local talent.
- Educational Outreach: As a non-profit, GMDT educates, cultivates, and inspires young dancers, positively impacting the community through the arts.
- Audition-Based Entry: Placement in the GMDT company is typically via audition, ensuring a high standard of dedication and talent.

GMDT Reviews
Georgia Metropolitan Dance Theatre has been a second home to my son and daughter for the past seventeen years. It has been the best experience for my family. My independent daughter was given opportunities to be a leader to the younger students, my son’s confidence has grown tremendously. The love that Ashleigh Whitworth and the staff at GMDT pour into our children is evident in how much my children have grown as dancers, the joy and passion they have for dance, the sacrifices they make to dance and the friendships they have formed over the years. Ashleigh has been so very encouraging, nurturing and supportive in the development of my son and the other boys in the company. I am so very grateful for the training, discipline and professionalism my children receive at GMDT.
Jan 17, 2019 · My Rooftop StoriesThis little niche non- profit does great work in our community, teaching students to not only dance, but also to be good people. Formerly known as The Ruth Mitchell Dance Studio, Georgia Dance Conservatory hosts the classes. GMDT has 3 major performances each year, bringing high quality dance productions each year, including the annual performance of The Nutcracker. I competed in Dancing With the Stars Marietta last year before COVID-19 and I'll be competing in an All- Star edition in early October of this year. I loved it so much and was so inspired that I joined the Board! I love this place, the people and what we do. Check it out!
Sep 01, 2021 · Brett McClungWe have been a part of the Georgia Metropolitan Dance Theatre for three years and have had nothing but a great experience. The organization has been very professional and the teachers are nurturing and supportive to each student. Lisa Toups' decision to entrust the directorship to Ashleigh Whitworth, has helped the company maintain the professionalism, high standards, and inclusion that I look for in a studio. Ashleigh has worked with parents and students to continue our time-honored productions. Her talents as an artistic director are easy to see and her respect and communication with parents and dancers have exceeded my expectations since I have been there. In my experience, Ashleigh has consistently shown honesty, compassion, high character, and grace in difficult situations and she has always been open and accessible for one-on-one discussions. I'm thankful for the way Ashleigh has been with my daughter, who has learned discipline, focus, and technique though Ashleigh's leadership. She has earned my trust with more than just teaching ballet to my daughter. I pass other ballet studios so I can be here and I will continue to do so, as long as she is in charge.
Jan 18, 2019 · Jessie AlfieriI am a proud alumni of the Georgia Metropolitan Dance Theatre. I first began with the company at the age of ten, and I danced with GMDT until I graduated high school. Last month I graduated from college summa cum laude with a degree in Dance, and I am now dancing with a professional company in Atlanta. Without GMDT, and more specifically without the artistic direction of Ashleigh Whitworth, I would not be the person I am today. Miss Ashleigh has developed GMDT into a company which trains its dancers to be both intellectual artists and members of society. At GMDT I learned much more than just solid ballet technique. I learned self-discipline, respect, teamwork, confidence, and perseverance. Miss Ashleigh is an incredible teacher. She pushes her students to work their hardest and to keep discovering new facets of their technique and artistry. She would always be willing to give me advice in dance and in life, and I still consider her to be one of my mentors today. She works above and beyond for her students, ensuring that they receive the best training and are able to perform in high quality, professional-level productions.
Jan 16, 2019 · Mary Rose GibsonGMDT will always hold a special place in my heart. Now an alumni, GMDT was my second home and my second family. From ages 2 to 18 I grew up in an encouraging environment and I couldn't be more grateful for the experience and opportunity. Ashleigh Whitworth and Kathy McBeth are the best instructors I could've asked for and guided me to be the person I am today. Ashleigh Whitworth is one of the best things to happen to GMDT and the company has greatly improved because of her hard work and love for all her dancers. I am so thankful for everything this company has done for me!
