For individuals and couples across the New York region, especially those in Rochester and its surrounding communities, discovering a place where they can learn to dance, connect with others, and even enhance their well-being is a true find. The Arthur Murray Dance Studio of Rochester stands out as a beacon of dance education, offering far more than just lessons. It provides a vibrant, supportive, and engaging environment where people of all ages and skill levels can embark on a transformative journey through ballroom dance.
At its heart, the Arthur Murray Dance Studio of Rochester operates with a unique blend of professional excellence and a genuine family-oriented approach. This studio understands that people come to dance for a multitude of reasons – from seeking a fun new hobby and social outlet to preparing for a special event, or even as a pathway to physical and mental wellness. They are committed to meeting each student exactly where they are, providing tailored instruction that aligns with individual goals, interests, and even budgets.
The profound impact of this studio is eloquently captured in a long-term student's testimonial: "This is my review 2 years after my original review. Yes, I'm still with the studio! It's the 6th year since my husband passed away, and I've now concluded that ballroom dancing actually helped me to find the new way to exist in my new life - I needed to be told where to put my feet, when, and where to look, how to turn right or left. Who knew a simple dance lessons were much more helpful than counseling!" This powerful account underscores the therapeutic and life-affirming benefits that dance, particularly in such a supportive environment, can offer. It speaks volumes about how the structured yet freeing nature of ballroom dance, guided by expert instructors, can provide a profound sense of direction and joy.
The quality of instruction at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio of Rochester is consistently praised. The reviewer continued, "The instructors are absolutely fantastic - they know ins and outs of any dances, international vs American styles, competitive vs social, serious vs occasional or casual, Smooth dance like Waltz or Rhythm dance like Chacha ...." This highlights the instructors' deep expertise and their ability to teach a vast array of dance styles and adapt to different student aspirations. This level of comprehensive knowledge ensures that students receive top-tier training, whether they are aiming for social proficiency or competitive success.
The studio's commitment to personalized learning is another key feature. "Over the last 2 years, I've seen that the instructors @ this studio continue to be very professional, disciplined and lessons are well structured, with adjustments to each student's level, interest, goal, budget, so you can go fast/slow, casual/serious, social/competitive." This flexibility allows students in New York to truly customize their dance journey, making it accessible and rewarding regardless of their prior experience or financial considerations. The emphasis on individual pacing and goal-setting ensures that every student feels supported and progresses effectively.
Beyond the dance steps, the studio offers significant health benefits. The reviewer, a registered nurse, insightfully noted, "Dancing is known to prevent fall accidents and even prevent dementia! It's the cheapest and the most fun way to get older for a better future (I am a RN so this is my investment for my healthier senior years)." This professional perspective validates the widely recognized cognitive and physical advantages of dance, making it an excellent investment in long-term wellness for New York residents looking for engaging ways to stay active and mentally sharp.
The studio's high standards are evident even on a regional competitive stage. "When I went to North East Coast regional competition in Boston earlier in June this year, with so many Arthur Murray studios students and teachers from multi states, I witnessed that our studio has a very good standard and we all competed very well against other studies, too!" This demonstrates the quality of training and the success that students can achieve, reflecting positively on the owners, a married couple with three children, who maintain these high standards. Their dedication ensures that students are well-prepared, whether for local social events or national competitions.
The inclusive and supportive nature of the studio fosters a strong sense of community. Despite a "no membership" policy, many students, some having danced for decades, feel like "members of this studio." This speaks to the personal and cozy atmosphere cultivated by the relatively small studio size, which prioritizes connection and personalized attention over mass appeal. For New Yorkers, finding such a welcoming and enduring community is a valuable asset.
Another couple's review further reinforces the positive experience: "My husband and I have been going here for over a year now; started as complete beginners and it's been a wonderful couples activity that we can do together. The instructors are thoughtful, caring, wonderful people, and know their craft inside and out." This highlights the studio's appeal as a shared activity for couples, a fantastic way to bond and learn together. The blend of private and group lessons, along with informal dance parties, creates a holistic learning environment where students can practice in a "real but safe dance environment."

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is my review 2 years after my original review. Yes, I'm still with the studio! It's the 6th year since my husband passed away, and I've now concluded that ballroom dancing actually helped me to find the new way to exist in my new life - I needed to be told where to put my feet, when, and where to look, how to turn right or left. Who knew a simple dance lessons were much more helpful than counseling!Anyway, this studio runs the most excellent ballroom dance programs - with the family business flair (the owners are a married couple with 3 kids). At first, I started once a week lesson only - I've never done any dancing until I came to this studio 2 years ago! But now I'm competing in a regional competitions. The instructors are absolutely fantastic - they know ins and outs of any dances, international vs American styles, competitive vs social, serious vs occasional or casual, Smooth dance like Waltz or Rhythm dance like Chacha ....Over the last 2 years, I've seen that the instructors @ this studio continue to be very professional, disciplined and lessons are well structured, with adjustments to each student's level, interest, goal, budget, so you can go fast/slow, casual/serious, social/competitive. Dancing is know to prevent fall accidents and even prevent dementia! It's the cheapest and the most fun way to get older for a better future (I am a RN so this is my investment for my healthier senior years)When I went to North East Coast regional competition in Boston earlier in June this year, with so many Arthur Murray studios students and teachers from multi states, I witnessed that our studio has a very good standard and we all competed very well against other studies, too! I know the owners of this studio are doing a great job, keeping the standard so high for so many years, which is no small task when they have 3 kids!I'm new to competitive dance but I've been given ample support on every aspect of my journey - I know I'm in the right place to continue dancing, whether I complete or not. I'm very grateful that they are in the heart of Rochester!!Anything negative? They close Saturday and Sunday - so I cannot dance those two days!! Also, they could be a bit bigger operation, I guess, but because of its relatively small studio size, it retains personal and cozy atmosphere. No shortcoming to go to competitions. There's no membership here, but many students feel like we are the members of this studio - some have been dancing decades! This separates this Rochester studio from other dance studios in the area - it's proven. Now I'm getting ready for a Florida regional competition inSeptember! And they all starts from basics - as all my dance teachers would say. I'm confident that I'm in the right place!***"**************Below is my original post******************This place is run by a married couple who are also great parents. Small enough to be personal, but large enough to be structured. They have great, very experienced instructors, too, and very diverse types of people all coming to learn how to dance. From salsa to waltz to hustle, from casual to wedding day special dance, from single men to single women, young and old, married couples, young children, many combinations. You can dance one or everything on the menu. I go there by myself once a week for a lesson and join a few group lessons a week (no additional cost), when I can find time. This prepares you to dance with strangers, because that can happen out there in the real world. It's great to be able to move around with music and know how to do it, even just a little? I plan on dancing until I'm 90, for a few more decades .... because that sounds like a very fun way to live. There are a few party events in a year, so you can dress casual, or a bit dressed up for the Friday dance party, too, which I have not yet tried.
Jun 27, 2025 · Mohri HimeMy husband and I have been going here for over a year now; started as complete beginners and it's been a wonderful couples activity that we can do together. The instructors are thoughtful, caring, wonderful people, and know their craft inside and out. We've picked up the basics for rhumba, foxtrot, cha-cha, waltz, hustle, triple step swing, and have had a blast going to parties and actually knowing how to dance together. Private lessons are fantastic, as are open classes (although you do get less specific instruction there). There's informal dance parties thrown for students to practice what they've been learning and well, which is great for trying things in a real but safe dance environment.
Jun 25, 2025 · KaylaNothing negative to say. The people were very friendly and took coats and got water and were very encouraging. They made it easy to learn first steps. Went for enjoyment with my partner/b…… estie. Mary was wonderful and learned us quickly. Joe was very happy and welcoming. The people like it so much they brought food for others for a smorgasbord. This was a special occasion not a nightly feast.
Dec 15, 2023 · Kevin MarkmanPerhaps, one of the best decisions of my life was to sign up at Arthur Murry. All the instructors are knowledgeable and love teaching their students how to dance. Plus, every Friday you get an opportunity to come out and practice what you have learned. If you're a lady, you're treated like one here! And if you're a man, well, you learn how lead and even be a bit of a dance floor hero. When you grab a wedding planner and she says, "Wow, I've never danced with someone who knows what they are doing before," you know you that you've learned how to dance well.Come here to learn, to make good friends, and enjoy good company. Maybe, I'll see you there!Credit for the photo goes to AMDS, which I shamelessly stole so that I could show off to all of you!
Jul 23, 2021 · Paul ThomasArthur Murray Dance Studio of Rochester is the best! By far my lesson time it is most enjoyable hour of my week. My wife and I started taking lessons last year to prepare for our daughter's wedding and never stopped! It's been an incredible journey. The learning, laughter and friendliness is like nothing I've experienced before. IT'S FUN! Take it from a person who spent his lifetime fearing the dance floor and self consciousness that this has been the most rewarding experience I could ever imagine. You will not find a better bunch of people to spend time with!
